2 More Women Die After Abortion Pills
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 11:26 PM by pk_du
okay- so now that I have your attention - and yes thats is the real title of the article......

Compare and contrast the title with paragraphs 2-5

<snip>
Five women in the United States have now died after taking abortion pills; four of them most likely suffered lethal bacterial infections, said Dr. Steven Galson, director of the agency's center for drugs.

Still, the risks of death from infection for users of the pill is roughly one in 100,000 uses - similar to the risks of death from infection after surgical abortions or childbirth, Dr. Galson said.

"There are no alarm bells going off because of this rate, but we are watching it closely," he said.

Dr. Galson emphasized that the agency did not know whether these infections were caused by the use of Mifeprex, the abortion medicine also known as misoprostol or RU-486.
<snip>

...so why the totally misleading title....oh , thats right, the "librul media" is at work.

On edit - Sorry , forgot link.

1. "Abortion Pills"
Good thing the "librul media" doesn't use loaded right-wing language in its headlines.

2. calling ti an "abortion pill"
is also highly misleading - it PREVENTS conception, you can't have an abortion of you're not preganant.

4. What infection...
Unless they can prove that it severely weakens the immune system, similar to a high dosage of steroids, then it is pure crap.

6. Sorry link not entered...
I think the case is being made that many "procedures" , whether mechanical or chemical , can in a very few cases lead to infection if not treated. ( esp. if high-temps etc not brought to doctors attention)

9. Sure, makes sense to us medical types ................
the abortion pill can sometimes result in an INCOMPLETE abortion with retained but dead tissues. The uterus communicates directly with the outside world via the cervix and vagina. Bacteria can get in there and wreak havoc. Rare, but very sad.

5. Last I heard the death rate from childbirth is a lot higher than than.
I am going to see if I can find it. Something more along the lines of 5 women for every 10,000. The rish of death from surgical abortions is a lot less than childbirth.

19. The risk of surgical infection from an abortion is much higher than RU-486
This is just another attempt by the Pro-life movement to get ban RU-486.

There was a young teenage girl here in the Bay Area who last year took RU-486 and suffered severe bleeding and got an infection. I remember several OB-GYN's talking about the unfortunate situation in her death (it was very sad) but they very clearly said the rate of such is so low and much, much lower than any risk that would have been presented in the surgical option.

The reality is this - we live in a world with bacteria. Infections can and will happen and are unavoidable. Even sadder with this young girl I referred to is that had she received antibiotics and attention sooner, she would have survived. Like any medical procedure, patients need to be monitored and receive proper care.

From my point of view, RU-486 is a lifesaver and important in the health and reproductive choices and care for women. Banning it and removing it from the market would be wrong and an endangerment to women's lives.

There are far more deaths annually from common over-the-counter medications.

11. Statistics on maternal death rates.
"Experts are starting to pay more attention to the U.S. maternal mortality rate, which has stagnated even as the infant mortality rate has dropped. The current rate, about 7.7 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, ranks 21st among developed countries. It places the U.S. among countries such as Slovenia and Portugal. The countries with the best rates include Spain, Norway and Canada--they have a lifetime risk of maternal death that is less than half the U.S. risk, according to the World Health Organization."

http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm/dyn/aid/705

And on the subject of abortion:

"Prior to Roe v. Wade, as many as 5,000 American women died annually as a direct result of unsafe abortions.4 Today, abortion is one of the most commonly performed clinical procedures in the United States, and the current death rate from abortion at all stages of gestations is 0.6 per 100,000 procedures. This is 11 times safer than childbirth and nearly twice as safe as a penicillin injection.2 "

http://www.abortionaccess.org/AAP/publica_resources/fact_sheets/illegalabortion.htm

Really sad for such a rich country. Found out recently we pay twice as much as countries that have universal health care. Nice to see how concerned our government is in the health of women.

12. 7.7 maternal deaths per 100,000 lives births is WAY more
than 1 per 100,000 - almost 8 times as many, as a matter of fact. REALLY misleading headline.

You are comparing apples and limes.
The discussion is deaths caused by infections, not all deaths.

18. I think you are understating the Maternal MMR
during childbirth. in 2000, I believe it was closer to 17 (per 100,000)

of course, I can't find data on how many of the children survived.

15. you hear me ladies?

Don't take RU-486! Don't vaccinate your children, either.

Don't leave the house while you're at it. Sometimes people die when they go outside.
