Zogby: Mainstream Media Try to Hide the Impeachment Question
Mainstream Media Try to Hide the Impeachment Question

The latest poll shows more support for impeaching Bush now, than there was for impeaching Clinton when Congress did so in 1998. But the mainstream wimpmedia are reluctant to report on this.

***

The impeachment question was part of a Zogby International poll conducted early last week, and released on Thursday.

It found that Bush’s job approval ratings had slipped a point from the previous week, to 43 percent.

But the jaw-dropper was that 42 percent said they would favor impeachment proceedings if it is found that the president misled the nation about his reasons for going to war with Iraq.

5. More people were for * impeachment years ago then were ever
for Clinton's impeachment. It was the public that saved Clinton from impeachment because we liked the guy and he was doing a pretty good job. Just imagine - $70 million to find a blow job. That was the best the repubs could do for 8 years. And then there is Bishco.

Or:

Environmental Protection for our future generations
Diplomacy with our CIA in place (pre-2000)
HUD/Fanny Mae/Freddy Mac homes for those without one.
Strengthening our Social Security, rather then dismantling it.

And on and on...

Seems the American people are getting the biggest blow-job ever right now under the BFEE Dictatorship.

6. Even MORE interesting was how the votes were divided.
Among those living in the Western states, a 52% majority favors Congress using the impeachment mechanism while just 41% are opposed; in Eastern states, 49% are in favor and 45% opposed. In the South, meanwhile, impeachment is opposed by three-in-five voters (60%) and supported by just one-in-three (34%); in the Central/Great Lakes region, 52% are opposed and 38% in favor....

I line in the South, but I'm very discouraged by their "support Shrub no matter what" attitude. But I was very encouraged when I read the info in the Zogby poll about the Western States! I realize they are somewhat sparsely populated, but they still have a lot of electoral votes out there, and for THEM to be the highest % preferring impeachment, well, it means a lot I think!

from Texas and North Carolina. I'm sure they're from states with the biggest Army and Marine bases.

I don't know for sure how Zogby catagorizes Western states either. Is Tx part of the Western States or is it part of the south?

But if members of congress start talking about articles of impeachment... and there's anything like 42% of the population willing to listen ... there's probably going to be some cracks in the media facade.

17. thanks for the welcome...i went off on a tanget d'oh
thanks and if anybody does step up and mention these polls (that'd only happen if the politicians of today had some kind of backbone to speak out on the lies of this administration or a reporter to uncover something "worse than watergate") it won't matter the administration will survive to see january 20, 2009.

the republicans who pride themselves on being loyal to the country (you're only patriotic if you support the war) are doing a disservice to the country by not investigating if our elected officials lied to us in going to war in iraq. IF it is true the president, and the vp among others, lied to the congress and the citizens of the us for this war; the republicans are saying it is okay to lie when american secruity isn't in danger from iraq (but terrorist threaten our security we should focus on that) or a soldier's life and the republicans say its not ok to lie about a sexual encounter with an INTERN.

the congress acts like "yeah we were lied to, but fa-get-about-it" i feel like when i read these boards that we're all living in a different world because nobody sees this...i'll shut up now

I think they'll survive til 2009 anyway... and maybe beyond. Nonetheless, I think pushing the impeachment issue is good as it puts them on the defensive and would complicate any further plans they have for lethal mischief around the world.

its great that conyers is trying to bring attention to the dsm but nothing is happening...it gets me so upset to see that nobody (except all of us on du)cares. powerful democratic senators (ted kennedy, hillary clinton, harry reid, john kerry ) should be the one's making the noise. its just like in december of 2000 when no senator would side with a member of the house to question florida's electoral votes. injustice was done step up! i know i'm still heated about the 2000 election and you know what i can't forget about it, because its not right and when we sit by and let things like that election and the reasons for going to war in iraq we're saying to future generations that all this shady business is ok.

The sheeple will get morally outraged over anything that the media plays as outrageous. Our House Reps and Senators have given this administration the soft glove treatment from day one. Yeah they're a little tougher now than they were in the beginning but they're nowhere near as loud as the pukes were(edit: and still are) about Clinton.

13. If a few brave folks in Congress start to say it out loud...
... and they really don't have to be that brave in a lot of congressional districts... some momentum could be built around this idea and could provide focal point for the midterm elections.

eg. "Are you for impeachment or not." Just having the question out there is a win/win far as I can see. Makes it harder for Bush, et. al. to pursue the rest of the agenda with the same demented sense of confidence.

Tangible results could follow... like Iraq phase-out and a truly moderate Chief Justice nominee.

20. If Durbin and Kerry etc can speak out about firing Rove
...why can't they speak out about impeaching Bush**? Where are the Dem senators on this?? They need cameras? They've got them on Rovegate. What's it take to slip in a quick, "Rove should be fired for his involvement in outing Plame...and there should be a Resolution of Inquiry into the President's lies about Iraq"???

42 percent would favor impeachment proceedings if it's found that Bush** misled the nation about his reasons for going to war with Iraq. Wonderful...and MEANINGLESS IF THERE'S NO INVESTIGATION. We'll never see one if the Dems don't take the opportunities handed them.

26. Sorry, but what investigation?
There's no investigation being made into the DSM. The Republican Majority will not even entertain the required Resolution of Enquiry to see if impeachment proceedings are justified.

I know some believe Rovegate will dovetail into impeachment hearings. I think the best we'll get out of Rovegate is Rove in jail...but I'm not even hopeful of that much. This administration owns too much of the government to let justice run its course with KKKarl, never mind Bush**. It can only be forced on them by public sentiment...and the public say they're waiting for an investigation into Bush**'s Iraq War lies.

Catch-22 unless the Dems start speaking out on the DSM and get the public to push the Republican Majority to do what they're duty-bound to do.

32. But this IS all of a piece
It all leads to the lie about going to war. Its not only about Rove, or Libby, or Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson - they are just pieces of the same puzzle Fitzpatrick is putting together. We do not yet know for certain what the focus of the investigation is currently but we know that it has evolved from its original purpose. There has been some indication that this is more than the leak - similar to but not the same as Watergate was more than the break in.

And yes, I do think that it will reveal the many levels of corruption in this WH.

47. But that is old news
I looked at the link to Slate from last fall. I wonder if they are still as concerned about him as they were then. Fitzgerald is a straight shooter and has prosecuted both Republicans and Democrats. From all that I have read, he is non-partisan. I live in the Chicago area - democrats speak very highly of him here.

My concern that his status is such that he could be fired by the WH given that he is not a special prosecutor like Ken Starr. And as it has been stated elsewhere in DU - Judith may be holding more back than her sources. Fitzgerald the classified reasons he wants her to testify and given the "threat to our national security" that judge has agreed to hold her in contempt. And this judge had been set to make a ruling protecting journalists from this type of questioning.

You need to look to the House, I think. There were about 25 House members crammed into that basement, 120+ who signed the letter to Bush, and the same names and amount that voted for an exit strategy for Iraq (The Woolsey amendment) and who knows how many would've turned up to that hearing if there was room. The problem is, the House is majority rule, so Democrats don't have to be listened to.

51. Could it be like anything that rots and crumbles, parts beginning to......
Fall off in the pit. Corporatism is at work here. Nixon got axed when started bitting some of the hands that fed him. Bushco is has been full steam on board with them Large multinationals like forever.

It almost don't matter what most think of him anymore, if corporate sponsors are happy with him it don't matter much

45. The tone of the headline--and of the article itself--
really sound over-the-top for an organization like Zogby. They sound really pissed at having their poll get no notice whatsoever. I don't think I've ever seen anything this emotional from them before.

46. Wimpmedia??
I've met Dan Froomkin, and I like what he has to say. Using words like wimpmedia will just get his article dismissed faster.

I still recommended it though, it's an interesting analysis.

52. This is an example of where we're at
"But the jaw-dropper was that 42 percent said they would favor impeachment proceedings if it is found that the president misled the nation about his reasons for going to war with Iraq."

IT'S ALREADY BEEN PROVEN in a myriad of ways that * misled the nation! The media has not done their job!

55. I was just looking at two other threads. Pew: 50% paying attention to
this issue (Rovegate). And another poll: 34% for immediate Rove resignation (with 50% undecided). My comment was that--although I think these numbers are pretty good, given confusion in the news monopoly coverage (most of it Rovian) (and that 34% is not contingent on indictment; they want him to resign now)--many Americans might think Rove is an underling, but would really perk up if they knew how serious the charges are (amounting to treason), and that Bush/Cheney could be indicted.

I think most Americans really really want to be rid of Bush and the Bush Cartel, have been a bit despairing since the stolen election (and don't know what-all to think of that, since the Dems have squelched the story), and so, it doesn't surprise me that 42% want impeachment. On the war itself, the matter is very clear to most, I think. Bush & Co. lied us into an unjust war, and a quagmire.

(I think, to many news monopoly-dependent Americans, Rove is sort of a side story. "Well, of course they tried to squelch dissent. That's what they do." That's what they think it's about--Wilson. To them, the main story is the war, and they haven't quite connected the dots to TreasonGate, to purging and blinding the CIA, to putting agents' lives at risk, to fascist gov't, to maybe trying to plant nukes in Iraq, and all that the outing could mean.)
