Blair denies Iraq on brink of civil war

Prime Minister Tony Blair Wednesday rejected suggestions that the "devastating reports" from occupied Iraq meant that the country was on the brink of civil war.

"I don't agree with those assessments," Blair said when asked by Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy about whether Iraq was heading for civil war, referring to the latest report by the BBC's John Simpson about the "escalating violence" among others.

Speaking in his last Prime Minister's Questions in parliament before the three-month summer recess, he also refused to give "an estimate" on how long a substantial British force will remain in Iraq.

"My response is to stand firm and see it through," Blair said, returning to his argument that the issue of the violence is about defeating terrorism.

8. Spot on as they say.
To be 'on the brink' the event in question must be happening in the near future. For example it is perfectly true that we are not on the brink of the peak oil crisis. In both cases the rhetorical sleight of hand here is that the event is actually in the near past. The Iraqi civil war has started as has the peak oil crisis. Just look out the mirror, you can see shiite and sunni and kurd killing each other in Iraq either directly or through their proxies, all because we are determined to posses one of the last sources of cheap oil as the peak oil crisis tears apart the fabric of the system of the world.

11. blair has no credibility
when Iraq was not involved in any attacks, him and his bush master claimed they were.

now Iraq is probably involved in the London attacks, and he's denying the link.

makes no sense.

13. WTF does he know? When's the last time he was there?
And British intelligence? They're the ones that said no group has the capabilities nor the intent to attack London.

Your own eyes?

And if you choose incorrectly, it means you don't support the troops and you want the terrorists to win! You libruls!

16. Well, ya gotta give him this: he's consistent; he's been wrong all along
How does this guy have a shred of credibility left? He makes Baghdad Bob look like a straight-shooter.

I don't know what's worse: the stiff upper lip twaddle or Junior's smirky little swaggering. Fine. Make more pronouncements that'll be shown to be way off the mark. I've heard of pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps, but this is dragging oneself through the mud.

Some would say the place is already in a civil war.
