Publisher of top German newspaper to start Polish daily

The publisher of Germany's top-selling newspaper said Monday it will launch a Polish daily next week.

Axel Springer Verlag, publisher of the Bild Zeitung in Germany, said the new Polish paper, Fakt, will hit newsstands Oct. 22. It plans initially to print about 700,000 copies a day.

Springer already publishes the Polish edition of the U.S.-based Newsweek magazine as well as 14 other titles in Poland.

The 120-strong staff of Fakt will be lead by editor-in-chief Grzegorz Jankowski, formerly deputy head of Newsweek Polska.

700,000 copies would mean the biggest newspaper in Poland. As the Springer group is well-known for it's pro-conservative bias this might be an alarming development.

Not that type of conservative. Springer is a right-wing group, but the one thing they never did was going that right-wing. Their political position is more like a continuation of Springer's hatred against communists and communism.
A few anti-Arab slurs, but overall the newspapers are neither racist nor promoting a German expansion. Doctoring photos to oust green ministers; that's more like them.
