Cheney Calls War on Terror Unpredictable
By SUZANNE GAMBOA, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 43 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney, standing with veterans to mark the 75th anniversary of the government agency created to serve them, said Thursday "we cannot predict the length or the course of the war on terror."

"We have no illusions about the difficulty of engaging enemies that dwell in the shadows, target the innocent, and recognize neither the laws of warfare, nor standards of morality," Cheney said. Nonetheless, Cheney said, the United States will "persevere and prevail."

Joined on stage by veterans from World War I through the Iraq war, Cheney was featured speaker at the ceremony marking the diamond anniversary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

On July 21, 1930, President Hoover signed an executive order to create the Veterans Administration. Former President Ronald Reagan elevated the agency to Cabinet level and made it the Department of Veterans Affairs.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/14/AR2005071400689.html WASHINGTON -- The government must focus on preventing airline hijackings and other terror threats that could inflict mass casualties, and is limited in the help it can give cities and states to protect trains and buses, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.

Attack on U.S. food supply 'easy,' senators warn By Sophie Walker
Wed Jul 20, 5:43 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An attack on America's food supply using biological agents or disease is easy to do, would spread fast and have a devastating economic effect, a Senate committee heard on Wednesday, as it reviewed protection for U.S. agriculture.

"In the case of foot-and-mouth disease it takes little scientific training," Sen. Pat Roberts (news, bio, voting record), a Kansas Republican and chairman of the Intelligence Committee, told the Agriculture Committee hearing.

"You put a handkerchief under a diseased animal in Afghanistan, put it in a zip-lock bag, put it in your suitcase, come to the United States and drop it in any one of our feed lots. And we're in a lot of trouble

7. One thing that is predictable is that when you go to war, you are
probably going to sustain casualties. Of course, Bush* said God told him we wouldn't have any casualties.

Others learning to hate the US was also pretty predictable, DICK.

12. Scuse me, Dick, but...
are other wars predictable???
Was VietNam predictable?

How can we listen to this BS and not be offended that these people think we are stupid!

What makes any war more predictable, is when countries have:
1 - Criteria to determine what victory is: WOT doesn't have one (very convenient of course for war profiteers...)
2 - Exit strategy in case victory doesn't seem to be happening.

We have neither.

22. Funny....is this the SAME Cheney???!!
Other top officials, including Cheney and Rumsfeld, said the war would last "weeks, not months."

Influential outside advisers who urged the administration to target Saddam went even further. Kenneth Adelman, a Reagan administration official who serves on a Pentagon advisory board, said in a Washington Post column in February that the war would be "a cakewalk." Richard Perle, who chaired that board until last week, predicted in July that support for Saddam, even within the Iraqi military, would "collapse after the first whiff of gunpowder."

Weird coincidence, huh?

And why would the VFW even let a !@#$%^&*()_)(*&^%$ like DICK on the stage?

having ultimate controlled borders, US citizen restricted travel, more ID, more need for domestic police, domestic monitoring, less rights to privacy. Freedoms that we have taken for granted will be diminished. All thanks to Bush/Cheney/Bushco's foreign adversarial policies. Buscho was wrong in following the path of rash rhetoric and aggressive posturing. They have no concept on how to put out the fire. Cold water works better than adding fuel to the fire.

49. Well, of course not, Dick, you bloody idiot...
fighting a "war" against an enemy who could be anywhere and strike at any time is kind of like that (just ask the Israelis how they've been doing). And you can't fight a tactic (which is what terrorism is). Can't fight a civilian population any of whom, for all you know, may be potential terrorists. They're not an army; they have no centralised command and control to knock out; they have no fixed base of operations...you can't call it a "war" at all, and you can NEVER win.

while repukes called the lefties 'chicken little' and 'negative' and 'traitor' Greens, intellectuals, many Dems (tho few who hold office) et al were right all along.
right that...
Bush was lying
Cheney, Powell, Rumsfeld, and other Bushholes were lying
we would NOT be greeted as liberators
it'd be a quagmire
many many people would die (and that pro-lifers wouldn't cry about Iraqi fetuses)
ousting Saddam would help nobody
stability could not be achieved w/ an occupying army
no WMD
intel sources not reliable
America, UK, etc would be less safe
there would be blowback

and sooo much more. Were we right then? Hell, yes. And we're right now that if you shut up your PR machine and think, if you respect your enemies' capacity for intelligence, if you consider their rational objectives and their irrational passions, if you abandon the assumption that our enemies are just more brown barbarians who hate our freedom... then the war on terror will be a hell of a lot more predictable.

They started all this by trashing the U.N., international law, the U.N. Charter, and the the Constitution, which requires the U.S. to honor all international treaties to which it is a signatory, including the U.N. Charter.

Then came Abu-Ghraib, etc., etc., ad nauseum.
