US lawmakers may extend daylight-saving from 2007
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050721/pl_nm/congress_daylightsaving_dc;_ylt=Ai9.D8Ye0XQa0QXXMZ.SQZis0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3OXIzMDMzBHNlYwM3MDM-

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Beginning in 2007, Americans may spring forward sooner and fall back later if a plan to expand U.S. daylight-saving time approved by House and Senate negotiators on Thursday becomes law.

Negotiators agreed to move the start of daylight-saving time in the United States from the first Sunday in April to the second Sunday in March. The end of daylight time would be extended by one week to the first Sunday in November.

The measure has emerged as one of the moves in the energy legislation expected to have the biggest real-world impact. The bill includes billions of dollars in incentives to increase production of oil, natural gas and other energy sources.

Lawmakers on Thursday scaled back the plan and delayed its launch until 2007 after concerns were raised that school children would be forced to wait at bus stops in darkness and farmers would plow their fields under moonlight.

2. Dumb shits, they cannot make more daylight by moving the hands of a clock
What a bunch of dolts. They will just have everyone going to work in the dark. I remember the oil crunch in the early 70s they tried this. School kids were going to school in the dark and there were more injuries because of it.

3. Why would farmers wait for the clock to plow?
The sun is up the exact same amount of time. Why would farmers be working 9-5? Don't they just work when the sun is up?

For that matter, why can't schools just adjust their time accordingly as appropriate?

The whole idea of daylight savings is anathema to me in the 21st century. It's a 19th Century hold-over. Just leave the clock alone.

The only good reason for a clock change is energy conservation, IMHO.

12. Farmers don't watch the clock. They watch the sun.
I don't understand how they are going to be plowing by moonlight unless they have a day job. If that is the case, they aren't really farmers are they? Their day job would be their occupation.

to work in a field.

I am not saying that this is representative of the region or the country but many farmers around me (Jefferson Co. Wisconsin) already plow and also harvest in the dark.

Many of the operations are modest dairy operations in the 120 acre size range and require either the wife, husband, or both to have jobs in order to make things like health care and college educations possible for their families.

It seems like the record demand for energy should be enough of an "incentive" for these companies.

7. I despise Daylight-Saving Time.
It throws my inner clock off, especially in the spring. Takes me 6 weeks to adjust, no matter how I try to "work up to it."

Have they ever determined any increase in accidents or domestic violence incidents due to probable sleep deprivation from DST?

28. No, but I don't know how many times I got to work late the ff Monday
after the clocks are changed in April when you lose the hour. The change upsets the sleep pattern of the entire country. It is so senseless. Even when I reset my watch and clocks, I will look at my watch and still feel it is not the right time...that off feeeling. Multiply that by millions of people. Keep it one way or the other all year round. end of rant (again)

Also, what's wrong with our current system, even though the idea is stupid to begin with?

11. Since I'm not a morning person and adjust easily to the change
I for one like the idea. I hate the winter when I get the fun of going to work and coming home in the dark.

I wonder if this will help lessen depression in the winter caused by people getting less exposure to natural sunlight.

I'm a big fan of DST.

And for those of you bitching about school kids going to school in the dark. Adjust the schedule - does it have to be written in stone?

As a kid I wasn't a morning person either - I'd have welcomed a little later start.

17. It'll mean darker mornings.
And as mentioned above, I remember the 70's. School kids were getting killed by cars in the dark. One of the main reasons they returned to the regular cycle.

18. Daylight Savings Time to Be Four Weeks Longer
Daylight Savings Time to Be Four Weeks Longer

WASHINGTON, DC, July 22, 2005 (ENS) - Daylight saving time is going to be extended by four weeks to shorten the winter, lengthen the summer and save energy. The measure was approved Thursday by the Energy Conference Committee made up of Congressional members from the House and the Senate who are working to harmonize their differing versions of the energy bill.

The legislation was first introduced by Congressmen Fred Upton, a Michigan Republican, and Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat.

“Today, we shed some additional light on the need for conservation with our daylight saving extension,” said Upton. “Not only will Americans have more daylight at their disposal for an additional four weeks of the year, we will also be keeping our energy consumption as a nation down."

Do they realize that they aren't really 'adding' an hour of daylight?

Do they know this will make some kids go to school in the dark?

29. "additional hour of trick or treating", "kids will rejoice"
per the article...um, no....many kids WAIT until it is DARK (at least for my kids/neighborhood kids) so this new deal sucks.
Plus..when Halloween is Sunday thru Thursay it is a frigging SCHOOL night so staying out later is not an option for alot of younger kids.

32. Complain To Your Representatives
Congress--doing little to appear as if they are doing a lot about the energy crisis.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a BAD IDEA, promulgated by BUSINESS (big surprise) — write your representatives and tell them not even Republicans can add more hours to a day:

...it turns out that DST had nothing to do with farmers, who traditionally haven't cared much for it. They care a lot less nowadays, but when the first DST law was making its way through Congress, farmers actually lobbied against it ... As Michael Downing points out in his new book, Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time, urban businessmen were a major force behind the adoption of DST in the United States. They thought daylight would encourage workers to go shopping on their way home....
