Ford white-collar job cuts planned?

Report: Automaker may cut 10,000-plus salaried staff, about 30% of North American total.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Ford Motor Co. could cut as much as 30 percent of its white-collar staff in the next few years, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that a spokesman for the nation's No. 2 automaker declined to comment on specific figures but confirmed management is considering more-aggressive measures to reduce costs, including further job cuts.

Spokesman Oscar Suris declined to comment on the 30 percent reduction target being told to some Ford (Research) employees, but he told the paper that job cuts announced earlier this year were short-term actions, and that the company is hammering out longer-term measures.

Ford has about 35,000 salaried employees in its North American operations, so a 30 percent drop would represent a cut of about 10,500 jobs. The company had already announced plans in April to cut 1,000 white-collar positions, and announced another 1,700 planned cuts on top of that on June 21, when it warned about second quarter results.
