China: Attacked villagers keep land

A local government in northern China has decided not to requisition land in a village that suffered a deadly mob attack after residents refused to make way for a power plant, according to state media. The government has sought to quell anger over the incident that left six farmers dead and 51 wounded.

A criminal investigation into the attack is ongoing, it added, with local Communist Party officials and construction company heads already either dismissed from their posts or among those arrested.

Since 2003 villagers have refused to leave land being sought by the state-owned Hebei Guohua Power Company, which hopes to build a power plant and a waste-disposal area on 26 hectares.

Earlier reports said three busloads of up to 300 hired thugs arrived at Shengyou village to punish locals for refusing to move off the land.
