ZDNet: Longhorn's new name: Windows Vista

The next version of Windows finally has an official name: Windows Vista.

The advertising tagline for Vista is "Clear, Confident, Connected: Bringing clarity to your world," according to a video of the announcement posted by Microsoft.

The company also said Friday that the first beta, or test release, of Vista is slated for release on Aug. 3. That release will be targeted at developers and IT professionals, said Brad Goldberg, general manager of Windows product development.

A second, broader test release aimed at consumers will likely debut ahead of Vista's final release in the second half of next year, the company said.

I appreciate megasoft doing this sort of thing occasionally. I have historically done quite well with their upgrades, but I suspect there won't be a mad rush to upgrade in the coming economic climate, at least in the consumer market.

Linux has really advanced to the point where it is a viable desktop OS. I've been using SuSE as my desktop for 18 months now, and the advantages over Windows are mindboggling... And it's free...

I said the same thing about XP when it came out. But when it comes to windows operating systems, I can't see myself using anything else for home now. I've tried switching to linux as my primary home OS for a long time, but I have yet to do it. I find it great for running servers, routers, firewalls etc... but I can't make the switch..

I will not give MicroShaft any more of my money. Mac OS X is even cheaper than XP and you can bet the new M$ OS will cost more than XP. I bought a five license copy of OS X 10.4 for $129, which means $43 per mac for my three puter network at home.

There's none of that 'authorization' BS. And no such thing as buying a 'full' copy or an 'upgrade' copy. You buy it and use it as you need, either as an upgrade or a full copy, whatever. It is your license to use as you need, not as a corporation lets you. They trust you. Nice to be treated as a adult.

This is how computing should have been from the start, had not M$ played dirty from the beginning. OS X is so much more stabel than winbloze. And I say that as a user of windows from 3.0 on. OS X just works!

No virus worry, no spyware, no malware. Life is good.

11. I still use win'98se

on my home 'puter I built 2 yrs ago, for two reasons:
1) I figured it'd take MS a few years to work out XP's bugs.
2) I know win98 like Eddie van Halen knows Fender guitars.

Side note: Apples is moving to the x86 architecture, so
in a couple years you'll likely be able to load the Mac os
on a "windows" system.

Apple is going to the x86? I haven't heard that, when was plan made? Sounds like a good move for them though. I take it they will have their own OS though, right? Isn't the OSX built on unix?

How do they expect to trademark such a generic name, as the USPTO shows over 1,300 other trademark for products with Vista in the name? Two are already using just the word Vista and are considered "live". Didn't the lazy idiots in marketing bother to run this by their general counsel?

We have to support products on all OS flavors; from Winblows 98SE, W2K, XP, OS/2, Linux. Now that Apple is going x86 we'll probably have to support them too.

Next year, the new Intel-based Macs will be out and capable of dual booting.

I'll keep XP on the drive to boot into Windows for games--the only thing it's good for! ;-)
