Kucinich Launches Long Shot 2004 White House Bid
Mon October 13, 2003 03:21 PM ET

By Meera Somasundaram
CLEVELAND (Reuters) - Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a liberal four-term congressman from Ohio and a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq, officially launched his improbable bid for the White House on Monday.

After months of campaigning, the 57-year-old former mayor of Cleveland formally joined eight other Democrats vying for the party's presidential nomination in 2004 with a hometown announcement at City Hall where his political career began -- and almost ended.

"I am running for the presidency of the United States to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq ... and to help make this country whole again in the world community," said Kucinich, who is lagging almost all his rivals in money, organization and polls.

Kucinich, co-leader of the Progressive Caucus that includes the most liberal members of the House of Representatives, is the only member of Congress in the race for president to have voted against the resolution authorizing the use of military force in Iraq

6. Nice guy, but
Although I like his unashamed straighttalking liberal views, he doesnt stand a chance in hell of winning, he like shaprton, brown, edwards, and (formally) graham belong to the " 3%-or-less club ".

Pull for DEAN.

11. Agreed, 100%
His marginalization is more a statement about the decrepitude of the Democratic Party than about Kucinich. In other words, it's not necessarily a bad thing to be out of touch: it's often a redeeming feature found in those who think for themselves.

15. He's been a darkhorse all along
He's also consistently overcome the odds, and beaten a few incumbent repugs. I'd love to see what he would do to Bush in a debate.

10. Wow! An LBN news article title that conveniently bashes Kucinich
I don't really care, but I think it's funny that candidate bashing makes it's way into LBN legitimately!

Kucinich really is, at best, a long shot at this point in time.

23. Sorry but no chance his ideas are too far outside the mainstream
Return the troops now? Nice idea but not only isn't it going to happen it would be both wrong and illegal to pull out now.

Reverse NAFTA? Uh sure all the capital investments made by US companies go down the tubes. If you think the Stock market isn't doing all that great and this "jobless recovery" is a sham wait until people are being fired by the truck load (more than even now). Look 25 years ago the staples of the US economy were steel and cars, well we adapted from that economic model and we will adapt to this one. The problem isn't in WHAT we are doing it is in HOW we are doing it, pay the same living wage that those industries paid and a lot of problems will be solved.

Repeal the Patriot Act? Sure that's a good idea

Repeal the Tax cut? No problem with that here, just redo it for less money in total.

I know a lot of DU'ers love him and I just finished Michael Moore's book last night in which he praises Kucinich but I hate to tell you that not only are his ideas way outside of anything that would get you elected to national office he just doesn't have the charisma to attract the numbers needed.

Just my two cents.

24. It's not outside the realm of possibility
http://kucinich.us/statements.htm#100903

To say so only feeds the usual lame Dem leadership-business-as-usual excuses for inaction.

25. So, yet again we don't listen to the Iraq people and keep on
keeping on? I see. Too bad THEY want us out, yet we can find a million and one reasons to stay.... hmmmm

I think pulling out immediately would be a brave thing to do while working on the UN and peackeeping efforts to go in and help the IRAQ people rebuild the country THEY want with OUR funds. We destroyed it we fix it! BUT if others want to help that is their choice.

Maybe we get oil from them at a hyped up price so they can pay for THEIR own rebuilding from our war profits. Just an idea.
