(Canada) B.C. woman to be ordained as Catholic priest
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 06:18 PM by sonicx
A Vancouver Island woman says she's about to be ordained as Canada's first woman Roman Catholic priest.

Michele Birch-Conery is one of eight women from North America heading to Ontario this weekend to prepare for a special ordination ceremony on the waters of the St. Lawrence River -- one that will consequently draw attention to the Catholic church's policy against women priests.

---

Father Glenn Dion of Vancouver's Holy Rosary Cathedral says the church has nothing against women. But he supports the Catholic tradition of reserving the holy pulpit for males only, and refuses to recognize the upcoming service.

"They might become women who went through some kind of a ceremony, but in terms of the Catholic teaching, they're incapable of becoming priests," Dion tells CTV Vancouver. "They don't have the intrinsic maleness to accomplish receiving that grace."

---

"The priesthood of Christ is a characterization of the man himself. Jesus was a man. And we are ordained as an imitation of Him, in the person of Christ," he adds.

1. it can't be binding
The Roman Catholic church is a hierarchy. Local churches have no power to alter such rules.

5. Oh, I've always loved that argument
"they don't have the intrinsic maleness to accomplish receiving that grace." One reason I'm a recovering Catholic -- I just cannot equate having a penis with holiness.

I never thought about that way. But then, any woman could say to any man: "I am holey-er than thou."

8. These will not be valid Roman Catholic ordinations.

Why the media give any credence to such a story is the real question. It has as much relationship to reality as "A Vancouver Island woman says she's about to be crowned as Canada's first queen of England."

'illegal' marriage licenses. Challenging the status quo is news.

The woman said she expects to be excommunicated like a few others have and knows she won't be invited to do surmons.

9. There are several popes
and several versions of the RC church.

Only your 'faith' determines what you see as the 'correct' one

11. No
The Roman Catholic Church has one pope. Eastern Orthodox Catholics have their own version of a pope

15. Apostolic succession is beyond politics
The National Catholic Church stems from a Brazilian bishop who was excommunicated, but he ordained others, and it all traces back to St. Peter. Whether Rome recognizes them or not, the tradition is unbroken.
