Memo at Reagan Library Sheds Light on Roberts's Civil Rights Views
http://www.nysun.com/article/17393

<snip>
While an associate counsel in the Reagan White House, President Bush's nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge John Roberts Jr., made an intellectual argument for limiting the application of federal anti-discrimination laws, but he counseled the administration that for political reasons it should not adopt his view.
<snip>

<snip>
Some conservatives also criticized the decision. They argued that only schools taking direct aid from the government should be subject to federal civil rights laws. Grove City College had deliberately rejected federal help, but some students had accepted financial aid.

Judge Roberts sided with the conservative critics,
<snip>

And the author saved the best for last:

<snip>
Judge Roberts also kept a file on at least one other contentious civil rights issue, the conflict over the government's right to strip the tax exemption of Bob Jones University because of its ban on interracial dating. That file is not among those presently available for review, according to the library's listing.

1. What a swell guy.
I'm glad that a lot of Dems are rolling voer, because if it's one thing we don't care about, it's civil rights. Why, didn't you know, according to them, the repukes have been the strong leaders on civil rights while we have been discriminating against minorities all these years?

:crazy: :sarcasm:

3. aa here, there is nothing we can do. if dems had the senate that
would be one thing, but with repugs having a good majority you know a up down vote is coming. then the next one will be a straight up repug.

4. Thre is nothing we can do? How would we know when we've never tried
Did Republicans say there was "nothing they could do" when they were in the minority? No, they took over the entire country from that position.

Our leaders are losers.

5. Hello, noone is REPRESENTATING US
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 08:43 PM by ecoalex
The DLC Dems prevail, and they are faux republicans.

The DNC Dems do represent us, but they are underfunded, and not " well placed" with the DLC.

It's got to come to a show down.

We must have a unified front, not a faux front a schisim of DLC , DNC

7. well yeah, cool. but what does that have to do right now, at this
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 09:49 AM by okieinpain
present time with roberts. hey using roberts as a rallying point for 06, and 08 cool with me. but the guy is going to get confirmed, maybe he will cut us a break on somethings, or maybe he will be a nut case like thomas, and scalia.

but at this present time, if dems filibuster on this guy, the repugs have the votes to override, and do up or down votes. while at the same time the media will push 24/7 about how dems didn't want a moderate judge on the court. if nothing else this will force bush to pick someone like roberts again on his second choice.

now if we get lucky and can get the senate back in 06, then I can understand pushing to get a more moderate judge confirmed. but until that happens play the hand you've got.

10. Even if the Dems don't have the votes............
...there's nothing stopping them from asking Roberts the hard questions, Roberts may still get in, but that doesn't mean we let him stonewall his way in.

11. Even if he gets in, he can be impeached!
Dems must get him on record for future refrence! When the pendulum swings back to the left (it well, eventually) we must have good records of the lies, distortions and other treacheries!

12. This needs to be spread far and wide
JOHN ROBERTS SUPPORTED BOB JONES UNIVERSITY'S BAN ON INTERRACIAL DATING, AND WANTS TO LIMIT THE APPLICATION OF ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAWS. This should wake some people up. I will not vote for anyone who supports this guy.

14. Tip of the iceberg? Robts wrote WH counsel memos from 1982 to 1986.
Unlike his Solicitor General's office memos (wherein he was ordered what positions to defend) or his DC Court of Appeals opinions (precedent-bound and dealing mainly with economic rather than social issues), Roberts's White House counsel memos allowed him unrestricted expression of his sickening ultrarightist views on constitutional rights.

The affirmative action memos could be just the first two of potentially DOZENS of memos that would be difficult to square with the "moderate" label Rethugs want to stick on him.

Besides, as with Estrada, Gonzales, Bolton, and some other WH appointments, there's likely tol be an arduous fight for Senate and press access to a huge trove of Roberts WH Counsel memos. If Democrats play this properly, Roberts could be forced to withdraw amid a series of embarrassing revelations of his racism, sexism, disregard for the environment, and corporate bootlicking. At the very least, it gives Senate Democrats like Kennedy and Kerry months of a national spotlight for exposing Rethug extremism. Drip drip drip.

18. Interesting. Roberts was with Reagan same time as Ollie & Iran Contra-
and when Ollie wrote the Fema dcouments including building concentration camps in this country for dissenters.

What was Roberts' advice on that...and civil liberties?

Of Roberts roll in the Iran Contra affair. I hope the independent media and real democrats investigate it thoroughly and get it out in the open.
