Saudis want bin Laden hunt to intensify

More military forces and equipment should be deployed in the hunt for al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, Saudi Arabia's next ambassador to Washington said.

Prince Turki al-Faisal's comments to CNN's Late Edition came after groups saying they were linked with al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the bombings in Egypt and London.

"We know that he (bin Laden) is in an area that is very difficult to pursue him in and, therefore, more assets and people and equipment are required," said Turki, slated to replace Prince Bandar bin Sultan as Saudi envoy to Washington after Bandar's resignation last week.

Asked if Washington lacked a desire to step up the hunt for bin Laden, Turki, currently the Saudi ambassador to Britain, said: "I cannot believe that because, as you know, President Bush said that he is going to get bin Laden, and I think all of us would like to see that day happen."

16. The problem with sending Saudi rangers to find OBL

Is the same problem Louis XVIII had when Napoleon escaped from Elba and started his 100 days. Every time Louis XVIII sent troops to captured Napoleon, they joined Napoleon. This lead to one wag to write outside the King's Paris Palace "Brother Louis you do not need to send more troops, I now have enough". Basically the French soldier preferred a Leader who had leadership qualities to the incompetent and reactionary one they had under Louis XVIII).

The Saudis have the same concern regarding their own troops, many of them would prefer to join bin Laden than to fight him.

was the man who tapped Bin Laden for his job as the figurehead of the Afghan jihad in the first place. They have enjoyed a cordial relationship up through the years and met several times in the late 90s. Reportedly, al-Faisal was a also present when the CIA station chief in Dubai met Bin Laden in July 2001.

I don't know what signals he's sending and to whom, but I'm pretty sure we're not in on the joke.

He's the next ambassador to the US, and what's on his resume? As the chief of Saudi Intelligence, he allegedly tried but failed to persuade Afghanistan's Taliban to turn over OBL, opting instead to resign on Sept. 1, 2001. Huh?? Nice timing, you Turki!

But for me, this is the real bomb:

Turki brushed aside US congressional complaints that Saudi money funds Muslim religious schools, known as madrassas, that may provide al-Qaeda and other groups with new recruits.

"We don't finance these madrassas," he said.
