A strike by India's 250,000 tea pickers aimed at doubling their wages to $2 a day has hurt the country's already slumping tea industry.
It's tea harvesting season in India's West Bengal, but the strike called two weeks ago has resulted in an estimated loss of $5 million a day, reported the Voice of America Sunday.
India, traditionally the world's largest producer of tea, has been facing tough times because of the declining demand at home -- 70 percent of India's tea is consumed domestically -- and strong price competition from countries such as Sri Lanka and Kenya.
