Oil Inventory In Gulf Nears Approval (Florida)
http://news.tbo.com/news/MGBS2VGRKBE.html

<snip>
WASHINGTON – Congress appears to be on the verge of opening up the long-untouchable eastern Gulf of Mexico, at government cost, to sophisticated seismic studies of likely oil and gas reserves – a possible prelude to full-fledged exploration and drilling.

Geologists would be allowed to “use any technology except drilling but including 3-D seismic technology to obtain accurate resource estimates” of oil and gas beneath the entire U.S. outer continental shelf, under preliminary language drafted early Monday morning by key aides to House and Senate conferees.
<snip>

<snip>
Politicians elsewhere have argued that the resources beneath the Gulf belong to the entire nation and that Florida, as a top energy consumer, should do its share in contributing to the feeding of the nation’s energy appetites.
<snip>

NOTE: I believe that many proponents for drilling were trying this same language to begin drilling in the waters of the Australian Gold Coast as well. I viewed a program on either FSTV or LINK TV a while ago regarding the battle regarding this same issue.

1. I doubt this will pass in the end. Or it will get vetoed.
Jeb Bush is against opening Florida waters to drilling (only because it is so strongly opposed by constituents, of course). Given who our governor is, and who the president is, I doubt we'll see drilling here until after the Bushes are out of the White House -- despite the family's much-deserved reputation as oil-industry whores.

5. except that jeb's term will soon be up (yay!) so he
probably no longer has any objections. that buddy of dubya's, who stole the election from betty castor, voted for drilling in alaska because he was promised there would be no drilling off the coast of florida. i'm not holding my breath.

3. At government expense again. I'm tired of supporting the oil companies
while they make billions. Are these offshore companies too that pay no taxes?
