MANILA: Opponents of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo staged their biggest protest rally yet yesterday, mustering some 40,000 people onto the streets hours before her annual state of the nation address, police said.
Shipping containers, fire engines and garbage trucks were used to block the crowd that police estimated at almost 40,000 from marching down a major highway to the Congress building, a few kilometers away.
About 6,000 riot police, backed by a thousand soldiers were deployed in the area to keep the protesters away. Leftist groups dominated the crowd, waving banners saying “Resign, Gloria,” and “Oust Gloria Now” and “Enemy of the Workers: Gloria”. <snip>
