200 cities hit daily record highs in U.S.; Las Vegas 117, Death Valley 129

Some 200 cities in the West hit daily record highs last week, including Las Vegas, Nevada, at 117, and Death Valley, California, at 129, the weather service said.

6. I've witnessed the temperature in Vegas at 116 degrees in 1951

and that was in the shade.

9. I listened to Gore discuss this last Saturday night in Nashville

He was incredibly eloquent about global warming, and how our generation was morally obligated to end it. He started out talking about these specific record highs, and the deaths associated with them... very moving.

It hit 104 this past weekend and my body got twisted up like a pretzel. Good news though I can walk today it's under 90! I am out of the damn wheel chair. Parkinson's is such a wierd disease.

The US was hit by drought and unusual heat waves, and climatologist Dr. James Hansen was called to testify at a Congressional hearing. (Actually, I think Gore may have been on that committee.) It was the first time the concept of global warming was widely reported in the media -- and Hansen himself has said that it wouldn't have gotten as much press if he'd given his testimony in the winter, or during a cool summer.

"On June 23, 1988, with the temperature reaching a record 101 degrees in Washington, D.C., and much of the country suffering from a searing drought, Hansen made three main points to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources: "First, that the world was getting warmer on decadal time scales, which I said could be stated with 99 percent confidence. Second, that with a high degree of confidence I believed there was a causal relationship with an increased greenhouse effect. And third, that in our climate model there was a tendency for an increase in the frequency and the severity of heat waves and droughts with global warming." Besieged by the media afterward, he said, "It's time to stop waffling so much and say that the greenhouse effect is here and affecting our climate now." Suddenly global warming-and Hansen-became world news."

The Bush White House complained to NASA."

11. wow that is HOT

Please folks, especially those with heat sensitive problems, stay out of the heat. Go anywhere to get out of it - shopping malls are good and if you are in Las Vegas, maybe hang out at one of the casinos if you can.

I heard that a lot of people have died in Arizona.

12. I feel for you guys

It was 91 and humid in the shade here in NY. I went to the supermarket and when I got back to the car after only 10 minutes, it was an INFERNO inside the car. Had to sit there for about 15 minutes with the windows open before I could even TOUCH the steering wheel.

Please, please, DO NOT leave children or PETS inside cars in this heat.

13. Keep hydrated

Remember to drink lots of water, and stay away from caffein (sp?)


I routinely (2-3 times a month) have to work where it's 130F+, just keep hydrated, and take lots of breaks.

17. I recently got dehydrated

and I had no idea what the problem was. I had to drink 4 liters of water in less than a day and keep my feet elevated for 24 hrs. The symptoms were confusion and also pain and stomach problems. Scared the hell out of me.

I never knew how easy one can become dehydrated! Yikes!

Drink a lot of water if you are in the heat!

In phoenix all of my cars have oven mitts in the mitt box for grabbing the steering wheel at first.

22. It's been almost indescribable -- that's 117 in the SHADE

I've had the AC on, the blinds closed, running errands at night. It's been so hot that my throat burns when I walk outside; it's been too hot to go swimming. Do you know how hot it is when you can't go swimming to cool of? Really damned hot. The LOW has been between 92 and 95 for a couple of weeks running.

Monsoons came through over the weekend, though. Vegas is now at about 102 or 103. Pretty nice, actually, unless you're out and about at rush hour.

On a more serious note, to save money, Vegas closes its homeless shelters in the summer, so there's nowhere for the homeless people to go (several have died here and quite a few in Phoenix). I don't know if every city does that or just us, but it sucks just the same.

24. 75 to 90 per hour winds

off of Lake Erie today hear in Cleveland. With a high of 95 with a heat index that felt like 105. It flipped a couple of choppers and some small planes at the lake front airport.
Nothing wrong with our climate. Just ask the GOP.

i felt that 117 was a low reporting of the actual temperature in vegas

never before i have stepped out of a pool and the air still felt hot on my skin

23. Eastern Oregon, it looks like it's going to be a brutal summer.

I am so glad I planted all those trees years ago, they help to shade and keep the house a little cooler.
