Sinn Fein chiefs 'quit IRA council'
Sinn Fein chiefs 'quit IRA council'
17:00pm 26th July 2005

Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness are believed to have quit as members of the IRA leadership, Irish Justice Minister Michael McDowell has claimed.

He said it was also his understanding that Martin Ferris, a Sinn Fein member of the Republic's Parliament, has left the Provisional's ruling army council as well.

Mr McDowell's claim in Belfast came ahead of an expected IRA statement in which the paramilitary organisation will outline its future.

Asked if Mr Adams, the Sinn Fein president, Mr McGuinness, the party's chief negotiator and Mr Ferris had all relinquished their alleged membership of the seven-man body which runs the Provos, he said: "That's my understanding."

1. Oh thats alright then. They've now stopped directing murder so must be
welcomed with open arms into the deomocratic process.

There will be a few thousand family members across the UK who will be jumping for joy at their noble decision.

2. Well, Adams and McGuinness have always denied
they were on the Army Council but, I do think this is a good sign. I expect PIRA to announce they will be disbanding this week or next. Hopefully the Peace Process will be put back on track soon.
