the AFL-CIO calls for return of troops from Iraq

CHICAGO, July 27 (AFP) - The largest US labor federation has called for the rapid return of US troops from Iraq.

It was the first time in the federation's 50-year history that the AFL-CIO has taken a position squarely opposing US foreign policy or military action.

"An unending military presence will waste lives and resources, undermine our nation's security and weaken our military," the AFL-CIO stated in a resolution adopted at the federation's convention in Chicago Thursday.

The resolution called for proper equipment to protect the troops, an expansion of veterans benefits and "a commitment to bring them home rapidly."

1. Yeah, as much as the GOP Bastards will benefit from a pullout,
I just want the troops out of harm's way, politics be damned.

2. the interesting thing is that the Iraqi labor leaders were there
The language of the resolution was strengthened after delegation members met with Iraqi trade union leaders.

The federation also called on the Iraqi government to adopt new labor legislation that conforms with international labor standards. Anti-union laws imposed by Saddam Hussein remain law in Iraq and prohibit workers in the Iraqi public sector from unionizing.
