With up to 30 percent of soldiers suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder upon returning from Afghanistan or Iraq, a congressional committee on Wednesday called for better mental health care for veterans.
Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., who serves on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, said the military's health care system is not equipped to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Troops often are reluctant to seek treatment out of fear that they might be discharged, he said.
"It's important that these brave men and women not only return home alive, they need to return home mentally and physically healthy," Udall said.
If the government heeds lessons learned from the Vietnam War, it will provide resources to help war veterans deal with traumatic experiences that may haunt them, he said.
