Chile: Protesters remember Colombo
SANTIAGO, Chile (UPI) -- Protesters marched in Santiago Thursday to commemorate the anniversary of an operation to cover up opponents` disappearances during the dictatorship.

Some 1,000 were observing the 30th anniversary of Operation Colombo, an effort by the regime of Gen. August Pinochet to cover up the disappearance and presumed deaths of 119 left-wing political activists, La Tercera reported in its online edition.

Earlier this month, Pinochet lost immunity from prosecution in an investigation into Operation Colombo. <snip>

2. There's a "deadline" approaching rapidly on the investigations

although it sounds like a cruel trap meant to thwart the whole truth from being published:
Operation Condor, Caravan of Death, Operation Colombo . . . Any others?

General Augusto Pinochet, who ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990, has been indicted for his participation in all these plans against opponents of his dictatorship in Chile. More than a dozen former police and military officers were sentenced in January for their participation in human rights violations during the Pinochet era. .

Operation Condor was a joint campaign by South American military governments in the 1970s to eliminate left-wing opponents. Operation Colombo concealed the cases of missing people during the dictatorship. The Caravan of Death involved military and police operations to kidnap, torture and murder opponents of the Pinochet dictatorship.

Pinochet also faces charges relating to his alleged involvement in and is being investigated for having about $8 million in a secret account in the Riggs bank in the United States. He was recently ruled fit to stand trial, and was placed under house arrest at his ranch west of Santiago, but he was released on bail.

The Supreme Court ruled January 25 that all of the hundreds of investigatoins pending against military and government officials for murder, kidnap and torture during the late 1970s must be completed by the end of July. Human rights activists protested that the artificial time limit was unjustified because the truth has been concealed and prosecutions thwarted for decades.

Anyone who hasn't taken the time to read about the measures taken by Pinochet to destroy most painfully anyone who didn't believe in his Nixon/Kissinger-supported and funded coup will find enough already available to make him/her sick, sad, disgusted.

Also, look for info. on the three torture ships which were used in addition to the 11 or more torture centers in Chile. It's hideous, and we unknowingly helped through our taxes, thanks to Richard M. Nixon and his Republican helpers in the Senate and House.
