Oct. 14— Persistent criticism on the economy and his Iraq policy alike are clouding President Bush's political standing, creating vulnerabilities that combine to lock the incumbent and an unnamed Democrat in a dead heat for the 2004 vote.

An ABCNEWS/Washington Post poll finds that nearly six in 10 Americans — a new high — call U.S. casualties in Iraq "unacceptable," more than double its level when Baghdad fell last April. Bush's approval rating for handling terrorism more broadly, while still high, now matches his career low. And most continue to disapprove of his handling of the economy, a critical election-year benchmark.

There are newer troubles as well: More than eight in 10 continue to see the alleged White House leak of a CIA operative's identity as a "serious matter," and the number who think the administration is fully cooperating in the investigation has declined to 39 percent. About two-thirds still favor appointment of an outside special counsel to look into the matter.

Bush is at 53 percent in this poll. And if you look at http://www.pollkatz.com you'll see that ABC/Wash. Post is a good 5 points higher than practically everyone else. So you'll be seeing polls with him under 50 percent (except for Gallup, of course!) any day now.

10. Quick observations

My god, look at how far Lieberman has dropped!

Dean, Clark, and BRAUN (???) are the only ones that have gone up in the polls.

Bush is losing support of the important Independent voter block.

And this one is really good news:

17. I agree on the Lieberman thing.

It appears mainstream Democrats are abandoning Lieberman in droves.

I feel kinda bad for old Joe. He's a good guy, I just don't like quite a few of his positions.

Lieberman a good guy? I disagree, he's the ultimate definition of a "Shadow Republican." I lived in Connecticut for a time and every moderate to hard-core liberal there disliked him so much, but he keeps getting re-elected because of the Republican vote for him. It was something like 1/3 or so of all Repugs voted for him in the last election! I don't trust him, he shifts his opinions and theories to fit polls, and he's pro-censorship, just to name several of the reasons why I feel Lieberman is not a "good guy."

In the polls I've seen, Democrats always supported Bush in higher numbers than Republicans opposed him. In this polls the numbers are similar which indicates that the base is coming home to vote Democratic. I hope so because that will save money and effort in the general if we aren't still fighting for our base while they can count on theirs.

They were sounding disgustingly giddy over the fact that the gallup was up 6 points (50 to 56) in the job approval rating, but qualified it at the end by including the stat that only 39% would vote for the twit while 39% would not and 22% unsure.

28. This Destroys Gallup's Credibility Completely

This poll confirms the overall downward trend. However, if you look at Gallup's last three polls you'll see something very interesting. The poll taken 9/19-9/21 has Bush at 50%. The next one taken around 2 weeks later on 10/6-10/8 has him at 55%. Around 2 weeks time is a normal break between their polls if you look at the history. However, they did something very interesting. They took another poll 2 days later 10/10-10/12, that had him at 56%. Now why did they do that? The effect that's created is three data points that seem to indicate and UPWARD trend.

32. This is good news - debunks the Arnold bump

that we were to believe from some other polls.

Practically speaking, the economy is bound to get better over the next 12 months and * will get a little boost there but nowhere else. So I think we are still in for a close race.

What we need is for Clark or Dean or someone to come to the forfront early in the primary season then we'll have our head to head polling and hopefully see *'s #'s deteriorate.
