'Champion of democracy' awarded
New York - Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar will receive the prestigious World Statesman Award on Tuesday evening at a New York gala hosted by the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.
The 50 year-old conservative Spanish leader, who supported the US-led war to oust Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, follows former Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in picking up the accolade.
The Appeal of Conscience Foundation selected Aznar for the award because of "his courageous leadership and as indefatigable champion of democracy, freedom and tolerance."
