Roberts Nomination Formally Sent to Senate
President Bush on Friday formally sent to the Senate the nomination of John Roberts to sit on the Supreme Court, while congressional officials said Roberts' confirmation hearings would begin Sept. 6. Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., was expected to make the announcement about the timing of the hearings late in the day.

1. And now the Democrats can start to question him in detail
I feel sure Bush will win this nomination, but I hope he has to pay a very high price to ram it through.

2. Perfect: Mercury is Retrograde
Research time for the Dems. Dig deep, because that's where the real Judge Frenchfry lies. Secrets in the Krypt?

This piss-poor timing may well prove to be a major Republican boner.

3. Looks like the link was changed. Here's the new one
Democratic criticism of Roberts continued, with former Sen.
John Edwards, the party's vice presidential nominee last year, assailing the nominee as "a partisan for conservative causes."

Republicans have suggested starting the hearings on Aug. 29, interrupting the Senate's scheduled monthlong summer recess. But GOP senators decided they would have enough time to get Roberts through the Judiciary Committee, and past a full vote on the Senate floor, before the court starts its new term Oct. 3.

The hearings should last about a week, with a committee vote expected on Sept. 15. Roberts' nomination would then move to the Senate floor for a final debate and vote.

Roberts Hearing Date `Fell Through,' Specter Says (Update1)

July 29 (Bloomberg) -- An agreement to begin U.S. Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts's Senate confirmation hearing on Sept. 6 fell apart after Democrats refused to guarantee a final Senate vote by the end of that month, Republicans said.

Republicans sought a promise that the full Senate would complete its confirmation vote in time for Roberts to take the bench by the time the high court reconvenes Oct. 3. Democrats resisted guaranteeing the timing of a final vote, Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn said in Washington.

Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, declined to comment except to say both sides were still in discussions.

Senator Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican, said Judiciary Committee members had been notified earlier today that the hearing would begin Sept. 6 with a committee vote on Sept. 15. Such a date would require the Democrats to waive their right to delay a vote for another week.

Specter has threatened to schedule the hearings during the week of Aug. 29, during Congress's five-week summer break, unless Democrats agreed to a deadline for the Senate vote.
