Al Gore's TV Network to Make Debut Monday "Current TV"...

sorry the link is broken but go here and scroll down to 9th story headline

Current TV website:

NEW YORK - Much of the talk around Al Gore's new Current TV network has been broadly philosophical, like the former vice president's statement that "we want to be the television home page for the Internet generation." With its debut Monday, Current TV will be judged by the same mundane standards as other networks — on whether its programming can hold a viewer's interest.

Gore and his fellow investors envision Current as a sounding board for young people, a step beyond traditional notions of interactivity. They want viewers to contribute much of the network's content now that quality video equipment is widely available.

Based on material previewed on its Web site, Current at first glance seems like a hipper, more irreverent version of traditional television newsmagazines.

Most of its programming will be in "pods," roughly two to seven minutes long, covering topics like jobs, technology, spirituality and current events. An Internet-like on-screen progress bar will show the pod's length.

6. It is available by cable and satellite in 20 million homes.
It's on the channel now called "Newsworld International."

They wil change the name to "Current" tomorrow.

Look under "Newsworld International."

If needed, you can upgrade your package if you want this channel.

34. Are they getting rid of NWI?
I love Newsworld International. They broadcast Deutsche Welle, the CBC, and Japanese news. I consider them essential to my media diet! Am I really going to have to forsake all that for Al Gore's "hipper" news network for kids?

I have to say--that's a piss poor trade.

36. I agree that's it a poor trade
I'm not in Current's demographics and I'm sure I won't watch it. I turned it on for 5 seconds this morning and realized it wasn't for me.

I'll miss the CBC News. I wish Directv had the BBC News on its own channel...not just show the news a few times a day on BBC America.

8. Sounds dull... enough with the television for news content
The internet, with its immediacy, and ability to stop and THINK about what you're reading, beats the nature of television hands down every time.

If you want to go watch a podcast (or blogcast) you can go up right now, find one, download it, even if you don't have a podcaster, do it through an RSS feed and watch it/listen to it at your leisure. You can pause it, go drink some coffee, and then go back and listen to it again.

I would have infinitely preferred that Gore do a REAL news show for the left instead of this, especially when it knocked off an already excellent Canadian news channel.

I think we don't pay enough attention to the TYPE of medias that are out there, and consider that if there's already a good process via the internet for seeing and hearing diverse content, we should be touting that instead of trying to force the better content into a dumbed-down, rigid format.

Because America Online's widely praised coverage of the Live 8 concerts less than a month ago proved a landmark in the acceptance of Internet television, Current runs one risk it could not have anticipated: potentially becoming obsolete just as it's starting...

Maybe it's supposed to do so badly that Al flips it liberal. Maybe THAT'S his plan!!!

said...Current's programming director. "We also believe it has to be unique. Who wants to watch the seventh clone of a different network?"

But I can watch base jumping on the Outdoor Life Network; white rappers on MTV, the making of fireworks on CNN, the plight of the fisherman on PBS, and child care on Discovery Health!

Hey, maybe we should get Take Back The Media or Bushflash to submit a few things, then vote them up!

33. LOL
Dammit, I LIKE the way you THINK :)

They never asked me about what would be cool on tv, we even held a Media Summit in Boston during the Democratic Primaries and got lots of writers, videographers, websites, FreeTV, Radio, etc folks to come out and address the problem...

We've been working on this for years, getting everyone in one spot, so we could lockstep those bastards out of office, and now what do they do? Create a station with lil stories about everything and nothing..

no guts, no glory.. should have given that money to about 10 websites and let them run with it - hell, I'm using rent money to film Conyers events so that we all have film that isn't spun, and these guys are spending millions for special interest stories..

I used to think Gore was really smart, now I'm not so sure.. "I know, let's give a hundred 20 somethings free cameras and see what they come up with!"

chaos.

Thanks ROckNation!

21. Doomed from the get-go with executives making ignorant statements like;
<snip>
But Lasica said lying on a couch still beats sitting at a desktop.

"Most people still want to watch television in the living room or the family room," he said, "and that's where Current TV has an advantage over any of the Internet startups."
</snip>

The people that want to sit on their butts and watch TV are not
the savvy people that surf the internet. The former want
to see reality shows and sitcoms. I give this network
3 months.

22. Those Not Willing To Give CurrentTV Exclusivity For 3 Months Are Foolish
The exposure is invaluable. And the mindset would be, for the artist, "I've only got this one great piece of work".

This sounds really interesting and I'm sure there'll be tons of DU'ers ready to shit all over it.

27. Maybe, but they should drop the exclusivity concept..
Once something is shown on tv, people in general who like it and have the right equipment can put it on their websites.

In practice, instead of being exclusive, a popular short may be on numberous websites EXCEPT the website of the director.

30. I'm in mourning!
Today is the last day of Newsworld International.

For those of you who don't know, and as I've been saying on DU practically since I joined, Newsworld International is/was the liberal news channel that you were all hoping for.

That's right people. Al Gore not only didn't start a liberal news network--he killed one that had already existed.

Most of its content is/was from the Canadian Broadcasting Company, with segments from other worldwide news networks. During the Iraq invasion, it was the only network that had trustrworthy information.

The staff is in good-bye mode, and they seem completely sad and pissed off about being taken off the air--for some amateurish videoblog, evidently.

Right now I don't feel very charitable towards Al Gore. Why didn't you buy NWI to enhance it instead of to kill it? Did the same geniuses who advised your presidential campaign advise you on this?

:grr: and

38. If you don't get Current with your carrier, the site email them for you
Go to http://www.Current.TV and enter your zipcode in the upper right-hand corner.

It will check to see if your cable provider carries Current.

If not, they will offer to send an email on your behalf requesting it.

I have to call the cable company today anyway, so when I do, I'll also speak to them about carrying both Current and Logo.
