Signs found 10 years in advance of Alzheimer's

Signs found 10 years in advance of Alzheimer's

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-07-31-alzheimers_x.htm

"The first hints of impending Alzheimer's include not just forgetfulness but lags in attention and other subtle problems that can show up 10 years before an official diagnosis, a study out Monday says.

The new report underscores the scientific view that Alzheimer's begins to injure the brain years before the hallmark symptoms of severe memory loss appear, says William Thies, spokesman for the Chicago-based Alzheimer's Association. Very early identification of Alzheimer's could become even more important in the future if researchers develop therapies that delay this degenerative brain disease, he says.

Such therapy is urgently needed: The population of Alzheimer's victims is expected to rise from 4.5 million to as many as 16 million people by the year 2050.

Lars Bäckman of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and his colleagues grouped together the findings from 47 scientific studies. They found a pattern of subtle thinking deficits that seemed more common in people destined to get Alzheimer's. The team homed in on 1,207 older people who had been given cognitive tests years before getting a diagnosis. They compared them with 9,097 older people who had been given the same tests but who stayed healthy.

2. It's a shame what the fundamentalist wacko crowd is doing
But the research will go on anyway, with or without government funding. In Europe, and in states like California, government funding is already taking place.

Yes, it's a horrible disease, my mom is suffering from the early stages of it.

However, if moron* continues this stupid ass belief, he only deserves to get it.

5. The Fundi's should refuse medical treatment if they are against it
Then the rest of us can go on with our lives if we want to treat the disease. Probably fundies will refuse treatment, once it's avalable, about as often as bootstrap Republicans refuse welfare.

7. was it 10 yrs. ago when beef people started feeding cattle the remains

of dead cows? Isn't alzheimer really mad cow? apparently they have none to little testing to see if a person has alzheimer/mad cow or something else.

60 70 yrs. ago some really elderly people would go senile, which had nothing to do with, and did not act like, alzheimer/mad cow. lines seem very blurred on this in an intentional way.

the bushgang AMA is being quiet on this.

8. alzheimer's is not mad cow
mad cow a merciful disease that kills in months, at most i heard of a strong young victim lingering 2 yrs

alzheimer's a cruel disease can take a decade or more to kill piece by pice

those with loved ones who suffer from alzheimer's already know they started losing sharpness 10 years or more before diagnosis, study confirms family's and victim's observations

ronald reagan showed cognitive deficits in the 1960s, check out his comments during gubernatorial campaign

there is no real blur, mad cow is rare and usually attacks late teens, early 20s, occasional middle-ager, alzheimer's is common and develops slowly in late middle age (early onset) to extreme old age

9. mad cow can be in your body for years before showing signs

many, maybe most people diagnosed with alzheimer were not checked for mad cow.

there is a lot of disinformation out there because the beef barons are so powerful and belong to the bushgang

10. Nonsense.
The differences between Alzheimer's and spongiform encephaly are obvious in both symptoms and after autopsies.

They are two completely different diseases.
