U.S. SUPREME COURT
Image-polishing drive staged for nominee
The former head of Florida's Republican party is leading efforts to burnish the image of U.S. Supreme Court nominee John Roberts -- targeting the 100 senators who will vote on the nomination, particularly Florida's Bill Nelson, the last Democrat to hold
The group is focusing on 20 battleground states, directing its efforts at senators considered susceptible to persuasion. That includes Nelson -- up for reelection in 2006 in a state that President Bush carried in 2004.

''I urge Senator Nelson not to hold America hostage with obstructionist filibusters as his party has done in the past,'' said U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, a member of the group's steering committee.
Some Democrats have suggested that Roberts' participation in the disputed 2000 presidential election disqualifies him to serve on the high court, but Nelson has been noncommittal. Nelson has said Roberts ``appears to be a very smart lawyer.
