Cuba gives free eye treatment (to Caribbean neighbors)
CUBA GIVES FREE EYE TREATMENT
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/world/americas/12272832.htm
GEORGETOWN -- More than 100 Guyanese citizens will travel to Cuba to receive free eye treatment next week, the latest cooperation program between the communist country and its Caribbean neighbors, an official said Saturday.

The patients will be the second group of Guyanese to get eye care in Cuba in two weeks, said Cuban Ambassador Jose Manuel Inclan. The first group of 100 patients left earlier this week.

They are receiving care for problems ranging from cataracts to nearsightedness. Forty of the 100 who left earlier this week have had their sight completely restored, the Guyana's Health Ministry said. The others are still getting treatment.

Cuba has treated 39,000 people, mostly from Venezuela, since the eye care program started last year, Inclan said. Patients have also come from Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent and Belize.

2. And Cuba is also treating the child victims of Chernobyl free of charge...
Looks like Castro is winning hearts and minds the way the US used to do...

I'm glad someone/country is doing this now, since those now in control of our country believe that "love" and "democracy" come from the end of guns and from bombs falling out of airplanes. :eyes:

Oh please! Its the Cuban people and their entire medical infrastructure that deserves the credit.

The Cuban people deserve recognition for their good deeds.

Mr Castro is not the doer of all things good and bad in Cuba.

7. But the Cuban people could not do this without the consent of Castro...
Those in THIS country who have gone to Cuba to offer free medical and dental services to the Cuban people now face serious fines and in some cases criminal charges for just traveling to Cuba.

10. Ridiculous. Its the other way around
The Cuban people are represented, nationally, by their elected National Assembly (parliament), which is the legal body that passes and enacts their laws and expenditures (including their nationalized health care system).

I have been to Cuba (legally) to learn and teach. I've seen an entire election season in Cuba during the 1997-98 elections.

Those who face charges in the US are being charged by US's OFAC because they did not get the required consent from the US gov. American citizens and residents require the consent of the US dictatorial government to go to Cuba. The government of Cuba throws up no such barriers.

11. Whatever. The fact is, when people think of Cuba, they think of Castro.
Thus, whether or no Castro has any influenence, good or bad, on these acts of charity, HE will reap the good will from those countries who benefit.

Thus "winning the hearts and minds...."

The American people used to understand this, that the way to win friendship and good will was to offer friendship and good will. That seems to have been forgotten by far too many people.

15. You probably will want to learn more on the subject.
Don't take the propaganda route. You'll discover some day it leaves you wildly uninformed, and wandering in the dark.

Did a quick google and found this item:
The 1985 establishment of Radio Martí—a U.S. government-sponsored radio station, separate from the Voice of America, broadcasting into Cuba—further strained U.S.Cuba relations. Castro immediately suspended the immigration agreement, and announced that Cuban-Americans would no longer be allowed to visit Cuba. The United States responded by barring any Cubans from visiting the United States. There were other demonstrations of ill will on both sides, but in 1987 the two countries restored the immigration agreement, and met to discuss the war in Angola. (Castro's support for the Marxist government in Angola had been a thorn in the U.S.'s side for some time.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I started hearing from people who live in South Florida for years that Cuban citizens have come for visits frequently to the U.S. at various times, which has dried up since Bush stole the pResidency. They visited their relatives. I have even read articles in the paper about their travels around the country, up north, and out west from Florida.
Non-Cuban people in south Florida have discussed Cubans coming for vacations and going home. They have visited Disneyworld, etc., etc., gone shopping, and returned home.
A man in a message group I have attended has discussed his Cuban friend, a professor who was invited to make a speech in South Florida at a university, after Bush was selected, whose visa was cancelled mid-flight from Cuba. When he landed he was informed he was not going to stay. He spent the afternoon with the American and his wife, looking around, getting a bite to eat, and returning home, thanks to filthy right-wing politics.
Cuban professors teach in American universities. I've read of their spending a year or two at major colleges here, being very well attended.
What's more, Cuban "exiles," until Bush seized power, and changed everything, used to go frequently to Cuba for vacations, to visit friends and relatives, etc., etc. Formally, they were allowed to visit once a year, but from what I've heard from Floridians, it was not seriously practised, as at one time no one seemed to bother them about it.
I also attended a message board which was swarmed by Cuban "exiles" from Florida, and one of the old bats freely discussed the fact her own sister had just come up and spent time with her in the State on a very enjoyable visit. Proud as punch to talk about her personal life, as if it were wildly important, herself typically haughty, as the old Battistiano ones usually are.
You're not going to sell that blarny to anyone who has taken the time to grow up and get over the propaganda. That only is credible to the most idiotic among us, and I'm sorry to say, I bought that crap for a long time, until I started seeing horrendous flaws in what I'd been told. There's no excuse now, what with the internet, to be dumb as a rock on this subject.
Eleven years after bombing, first Argentine film is aired; ambassador says event left a deep mark on all of Argentina
By Ynetnews
HAVANA - The first Argentine film about the 1994 terrorist attack on a Jewish community center has just been shown in Cuba.
The film, "18-J ," is a compilation of 10 short films about the event and its victims. The films each have a different director and producer.
A Cuban newspaper described it as "a quest for the human values which must be recovered. The film's declared intention is to preserve the memories of those lost in the attack and to repudiate the complicity of the government power structure in its indifference to society."
The presentation in Havana was organized by the Jewish Community of Cuba and the Embassy of Argentina.
Vt. heifers heading to Cuba this week
August 3, 2005
By Bruce Edwards Herald Staff
Nearly 100 Vermont cows will receive a special welcome when a trade mission led by Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie arrives in Cuba on Friday.
The visit by Dubie and state Agriculture Secretary Steve Kerr is meant to coincide with the inaugural sale of 94 registered heifers from Vermont to help rebuild Cuba's dairy herd.
(snip)
Food, agricultural commodities and medical supplies are the only items exempt from the 43-year-old U.S. trade embargo of Castro's regime.
Dubie, a Republican, is well aware of the Bush administration's opposition to even limited trade with Cuba.
Havana, Aug 4 (AIN) The General Secretary of the World Council of
Rev. Kobia came to the island in response to an invitation by the Cuban Council of Churches. His tight agenda included meetings with representatives of the island's Christian community and local government authorities.
(snip)
Rev. Kobia was born March 20, 1947 in Kenya and was elected to his post in August 2003 as the first African to lead the World Council of Churches, made up by more than 340 Christian (Protestant) churches in 100 countries with some 400 million followers.
