Questions linger as Bush pushes India nuclear deal

A recent U.S.-India nuclear agreement was so hastily concluded the Bush administration is only now beginning to figure out how to implement it in the face of tough questions from the U.S. Congress and nonproliferation experts.

The agreement, announced July 18 after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met President Bush at the White House, upends decades-old nonproliferation rules and will require changes in U.S. law and international policy.

U.S. officials are optimistic the Republican-controlled Congress will approve steps to fulfill Bush's promise to sell civilian nuclear technology to India.

Such sales are now prohibited under U.S. law because India refused to sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, or NPT, and is producing nuclear weapons banned by the pact and other agreements.

14. Not just anything. But to anybody...
... regardless of how it will be perceived by the Islamic world.

This was definitely not a bright move, either from the non-proliferation *or* the fight against terrorism perspective.

2. The ironic thing is that the US signed the nonproliferation treaty
but has already broken it. So are we breaking the law by selling to India, or are they breaking the law by buying from us?

 :silly:  :silly:  :silly:  :silly:

:wtf:

3. Anything for a buck
The BushCo stockholders must be thrilled.

George Bush would sell rope to Klansmen, industrial ovens to Nazis, little boys to pedohiles.

ANYTHING is fine, as long as you make a buck.

8. He truely believes he is a dic-tater, and it sure is starting to feel that
way these past few weeks.

I think this is just more evidence that China is a greater economic threat to the US than anyone is willing to admit, and Shrub's looking to:

A)Make a few alliances just in case the shit hits the fan and the loans come due.

B) Keep the rest of the world a bit unstable - makes it harder for them to unite against the US when the shit hits the fan and the loans come due.

Meantime, it would give our energy/nuclear sector a boost. Perhaps we can get some ideas on going about creating nuclear power from India's engineers as well.

:wtf: is this line about? World's largest democracy? He still hasn't defined that term. What does democracy mean to this cabal anyway? Would be nice to know what the hell we're spreadin' who's already got it and who don't.

After India tested nuclear weapons in 1998, Washington led international condemnation. But Bush has accelerated an embrace of the world's largest democracy.

9. Sheer insanity, we are supposed to be decreasing nuclear weapons.
Remember when we sold biological and chemical weapons to Iraq and Iran when they were our supposed allies and a few short years later we are bombing the shit out of 'em? This evil cabal is not wise or shrewd enough to sell fucking bb's let alone nuclear weapons.

I hope and pray congress(lets all let our congress people know how we feel) have enough sense to put a stop to this madness.

About 4 years ago when Chimpy backed us out of the nuclear proliferation treaty, I went on a campaign begging TNN to play a weekend of anti-nuclear movies such as Testament and The Day After. I remember in the 80's these movies had a tremendous impact on me and really caused me to do much soul searching about the use of nuclear weapons and their impact on human lives and the environment.

I fear that many today play games like Duke Nuke'em and that the word nuke itself is used so cavalierly that the ramifications and effects in reality(something our country is sorely lacking in these days)are lost on many.

13. Referring to the photo above:
Bush: (holds up the glass, feels more charming than ever) Mr. Singh, cheers to a New Era of co-operation between India and the US.

Secretly, he's hoping that Mr. Singh will fall for the ruse. Just a couple of weeks ago, India made some agreements with Iran to purchase oil from them. A pipeline is being built. The US is coming apart at the seams. They threatened to bomb Iran if India chooses to do this.

Mr. Singh: (holds up his glass, smiles. He knows what Bush is up to) Cheers, Mr. President. I hope we can continue to do business. We are looking forward to new, warmer relations with your country.

Mr. Singh is no fool. He knows that India needs oil. He hasn't forgotten that the US recently gave stealth jets to Pakistan and basically guaranteed that they are now a nuclear power. He knows Bush would sell his mother, if he could get $5.00 for her.

Bush: (swallows the wine in one gulp, knows he should not be drinking)So what do you think, Man? Do you wanna come to my ranch?

Singh: Oh, yes, that sounds wonderful....

India has decided two can play at this game. They'll take the nukes, but they'll still make their deal with Iran. They'll get Russia involved. The US will exhaust itself financially in Iraq anyway.

Bush: (starting to feel tipsy). You know, I love your hat. My mom has one just like it.

Singh: What?
