U.S. Rejects Timetable Proposal for Iraq
he United States rejected a proposal by France, Russia and Germany Tuesday to add a timetable for the transfer of power to Iraqis to its new resolution and give Secretary-General Kofi Annan a role in its preparation.

The absence of a timetable diminished the likelihood that the resolution will be adopted with broad support from the 15-member Security Council. But it is still likely to get at least the minimum nine "yes" votes needed for adoption. A vote could come early as Wednesday afternoon.

The timetable was the centerpiece of a package of amendments offered by France, Russia and Germany — and later supported by China — in an effort to reach a compromise with the United States on the transition from U.S. occupation to the restoration of Iraqi sovereignty.

1. Wha....? Didn't we almost have 'em?
It might pass, but without France, Germany, or Russia, what kind of mandate will it be, exactly??

2. I wouldn't be surprised if Russia, China, or France uses their veto.

The US rejection of the 'centerpiece' of the compromise is the latest of so many slaps in the face... how long can they take it?

Three Countries Give U.S. a Key Iraq Concession

France, Russia and Germany on Tuesday dropped their demands that the United States grant the United Nations a central role in Iraq (news - web sites)'s reconstruction and yield power to a provisional Iraqi government in the coming months.

The move constituted a major retreat by the Security Council's chief antiwar advocates, and signaled their renewed willingness to consider the merits of a U.S. resolution aimed at conferring greater international legitimacy on its military occupation of Iraq.

All three countries seem willing to accept a resolution that would retain U.S. authority over Iraq's political future while extending only a symbolic measure of sovereignty to Iraqis. But a major sticking point remains: The three governments made new demands, including setting a timetable for ending the U.S. military occupation in Iraq and strengthening the Security Council's role in monitoring Iraq's political transition.
