Man badly beaten after asking for time
Man badly beaten after asking for time
Forum staff reports, The Forum
Published Tuesday, August 02, 2005

A man was beaten unconscious in downtown Fargo for asking the time from a stranger, police said.

A witness said Roman Varno, a 23-year-old from Detroit Lakes, Minn., approached a passing walker about 10:20 p.m. Saturday near the corner of Broadway and Second Avenue North.

The passer-by, later identified as 38-year-old Erick M. Galloway, told Varno he was “disturbing his peace” and began to argue with him, the witness told police.

Galloway turned to leave but returned and punched Varno in the face, dropping him to the ground, according to the witness, who was with Varno. He then kicked Varno three times when he was down, other witnesses told police.

“He basically just beat the heck out of this guy after the guy asked him what time it was,” said Sgt. Jeff Skuza. “Our suspect thought that he was rude the way he asked.”

Officers responding to the call found Varno lying behind a bench, bleeding from his face and unconscious. He came to before the ambulance arrived and was taken to MeritCare Hospital.

10. Just like all people in the South are Racists
I know it to be true because a DU'er told me so! I was also informed that crimes of bias never happen in the north OR in blue states. It's physically impossible!!! AND if they DO happen in the north or in blue states, it was perpetrated by someone from a RED state!!!

tis true!

14. Sorry
But the red states are severely lacking in caring about the welfare of this nation as a whole. The red states take more from taxes than they pay in and have a social history no one could admire.

That said, I realize some democrats are there.

17. No one said that everyone in the south is a saint
but they are not ALL avowed racists, war-mongers, bigots, or bush supporters(as has been stated on DU numerous, numerous times).

The south does not have a monopoly on hate. They do not have a monopoly on bigotry or racism. That is a swath that has been painted across this entire country, all areas included.

I grew up in South Carolina. Spent 25 of my 29 years on this planet there. 95% of my family lives east of the Mississippi and south of the Mason Dixon.

Every single one of them WITHOUT EXCEPTION are die hard, labour loving, progressive liberal democrats. They are not racists, they are not bigots, they are no more filled with hate than any other person of any other region.

You can talk in broad generalizations about Red States. However, please remember that GW Bush is NOT indicative of Americans, and the policies of red states are NOT indicative of the people who live there.

My family is among MILLIONS in that area who believe that change has to come from within, and do everything in their power to CHANGE not only the mentality of the south, but the IMAGE of the south.

I swear to God---The cure for Cancer, AIDS, and foot fungus could be found in Tuskaloosa Alabama and DU'ers would STILL deride the south for being "stuck in the middle ages" or some other such nonsense.

19. who is this "South" that you're talking about?
I mean, granted, there are people living in the South, but how can my grandmother be to blame for Strom Thurmond being SC Senator for 10,000 years? She's only one woman, with one vote, and one voice.

Do you blame ALL the citizens of other regions the same as you do the South? What crosses must the North bear? What about the Midwest---they're just as 'backwards' as the south is---Fred Phelps is from Kansas, that's where the Scopes Monkey Trial was, that's where stickers are going on textbooks talking about Evolution not being tested. Do you hold all citizens of Kansas accountable for the actions of a few?

What about all Americans? It's not like every region, save for the south, is just bubbling over with moral fortitude. CHinese slaves? Black Slaves? Native American genocide? What about that--do you hold YOURSELF accountable for the actions of GW Bush? I mean, according to you the problem with the United States is that we say one thing and deliver another, right?

We're all equally culpable for the actions of others? If I live in a southern state, no matter how much I petition and vote and do voter drives and mail ins and such, I'm STILL to blame for the attitudes of high ranking SOutherners? Wow. When did I get that much power? I thought I was just a voter with a vote, and that it was the people who were voted in (none of which, to my knowledge, are voted in unanimously, by the way) who made the laws and such.

Wow.

Please tell me, what absolute utopian state do you live in that does no wrong, has no skeletons in its closet and holds the moral high ground on EVERY issue? Because you know, if there's just ONE bad thing about your state or your region, YOU ARE SQUARELY TO BLAME!!!

25. Why is your profile blank?
That's usually the case with the bashers, of course--they tend to be very careful to conceal their own origins, as well as their agendas.

Tell us where you're from so that we can discuss the sins of your own corner of the world.

You should know better than to ask one of us for the time in a red state - we will be handing out beatdowns for that.

24. "they say"
You do realize, don't you, that there are way, way too many of "they" to say or do one thing?

In other words, you're engaging in the very same sort of bigoted stereotyping that you object to in others, but you're way too self-righteous to see the irony of it all.

23. Your comments are based upon a gross oversimplification...
Red and blue characteristics flow freely across state lines. Classifying a state as either red or blue, based upon votes cast for one office, in one election, is a very crude way to visual the politics of the country. If one breaks it down by county, you get a more refined (albeit still rather crude) view. However, there are many counties where only a very slim majority voted Republican, so you can refine it a little further by using red, blue, & shades of purple to indicate the percentages of voters:

And even this map is fairly crude, because it doesn't take population concentrations into account, or congressional elections, or state, county, and city elections, or previous election results, or current trends, etc.

The point is, assigning human character traits to the populace of an entire state based upon one election, for one office (for which results aren't reliable due to massive election fraud) isn't something we should be doing.

5. Good Lord.
Over asking what tie it is? Unbelievable.

What the hell is going on in this world? People are just too angry. Even if a guy decked out in * gear asked me the time, I wouldn't beat him. I may ignore him, but not beat him... or just tell him the wrong time (hehehe) but for Heaven's sake... to beat someone. How barbaic.

I hope the victim is ok.

Seriously. How fucked up is that. The guy asked for the time in a "rude" manner--how cna you ask for the time in a "rude" way?

WHAT FUCKING TIME IS IT????

even that--does it deserve a beating? Why not just say "I'm not wearing a watch" and walk away. I do it all the time, especially if I'm not wearing a watch and don't feel like digging out the cellphone.

What a fucking psychophath, that guy. Sheesh!

We are seeing the downfall of this country's economic basis and it's moral basis. Thanks to W. We are in despair, minus the top elitists echelons who've never been happier and bury their head in the sand about what's going on with the rest of the country.

It's the political spoils to the Pug thugs, and fairness and decency and morality be damned. None of the actions of this administration ever get punished. A stellar moral example for all.

13. Welcome to George Bush's America
I don't know the story behind the story but I know civility is dead and everybody is stressed out because of the war, the price of oil, the lack of jobs, inability to find relief from debt, and an administration that doesn't give a damn about its citizens.
