US slams violence against protesters in Cairo
US slams violence against protesters in Cairo

August 02 2005 at 08:51AM

Washington - The United States on Monday condemned the beating of protesters opposed to another term for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, whom Washington has urged to lead democratic reform in the Middle East.

Egyptian police and plainclothes men beat protesters with clubs on Saturday as they demonstrated against any extension to his rule. Last week the key United States ally said he would seek a fifth six-year term in September elections.

"This incident is again a serious one, and it's one we have concerns about and one that we will speak out on, both from here and in our private discussions with the Egyptians," State Department spokesperson Tom Casey told reporters.

The Bush administration has been more outspoken about abuses of power in the Middle East this year and has claimed some credit for prompting reforms.

if protesters left the "free speech zones" and wandered closer to George W. Bush.

3. To really show they are pissed off
they could stop kidnapping people and 'rendering' them to Egypt for torture. That would show them.

5. Advice they should take! Don't let them torture any more evil-dooers!
There are still some countries left which would undoubtedly be glad to help torture some of Bush's guests for a little foreign aid, just like Egypt.

Makes you wonder what Mubarak has done to get on Bush's bad side, to move him to start championing the Mubarak protestors! Gee, it only seems like yesterday Mubarak sat on Bush's right hand as he hauled him around in the golf cart.

6. So stop sending the aid, then...
This is nothing more than a propaganda ploy; those in power in Cairo know well that those in power in Washington fully endorse all efforts to keep the population in check, and in fact that the Mubarak regime has been and is being backed precisely because they perform that task.

7. a serious one...one we will speak out on, both here and in private
Did Casey go to the McSausage school of propoganda, b/c I don't see that he spoke about it much 'here?'
