Tehran, 2 August (AKI) - The Iranian decision to re-start its nuclear activity at the site in Isfahan is irreversible, according to Ali Aghamohammadi, a spokesperson for Iran's Supreme National Security Council, speaking in Tehran. "The political decision was taken, we have sent a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," he said. "The process is irreversible," he added.
After two years of negotiations between Iran and the European Union trio of Britain, France and Germany over the nuclear programme that Tehran had kept secret for 18 years, it appears that the crisis could now result in the EU sending Iran's case to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions.
The EU countries had been trying to mediate between the United States, which says that Iran is producing nuclear weapons, while Tehran insists that its nuclear programme is only for civilian purposes to meet its energy requirements.
On Monday, Tehran had said that members of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency, the IAEA, were setting up surveillance equipment at its nuclear plant in Isfahan in order to monitor the work that will be conducted.
