Xstrata injuries horrify Numsa
Rustenburg - The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) said on Monday it was horrified injuring of protesters during a legal strike outside the Xstrata chrome mine near Rustenburg.

"We are horrified," said spokesperson Dumisa Ntuli.

"The action is totally unwarranted and will further fuel tensions and anger. The (private security) company must take a blame."

At least seven striking mine workers were injured when security guards shot tear gas grenades at protesters. <snip>

1. people need to be a bit more aware of the US doing the same things
All of the WTO protests since Seattle (and possibly including it) and the 2004 RNC Convention have featured police brutality on unprecedented scales.

Collecting data about injuries sustained by the protesters would be useful. Thus far the only story with any "legs" is the pro-FTAA documentary filmer whose was seriously facially disfigured by indiscriminate police brutality. This is a problem, because it amounts to a coverup of all of the other serious injuries sustained by the actual protesters/demonstrators.

2. I used to live in Rustenburg
Visited the platinum mines there once.

Which is irrelevant, I know.

4. I was a kid at the time
And I don't remember the details, unfortunately. I think some adults I was with decided to stop by the mines on the way back from Johannesburg.

They were set up for visitors, I think, and had someone available to show people around.
