Marine Group in Iraq Issues Statement Blasting Images (of Dead Marine?)
http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Aug2005/20050803_2323.html

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3, 2005 – Marine Corps officials in Iraq issued an emotionally worded statement today as they investigate whether a body in a video and photographs circulating in the region are of a Marine killed in action this week.

The Combined Press Information Center in Baghdad released the statement on behalf of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), which has lost 21 Marines to terrorist attacks in the last three days, including 14 who died in a roadside bomb explosion this morning.

"We are aware that a video and photos exist of a body purported to be a Marine killed in action near Haditha on Aug. 1," the statement said. "We are reviewing the materials to determine if the body shown is one of the Marines killed that day."

Six Marines were killed in action near Haditha Aug. 1.

The statement went on to express condolences to the fallen Marines' families, friends and comrades, and regret that the images are circulating.

2. google "dead Iraqi" and then tell me why this marine's image...
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 05:06 PM by mike_c
...was so bloody sacred. Why aren't the marines issuing "emotionally worded statements" about all of those dead?

on edit-- and it's a LIE that those marines were killed by "terrorists." :grr:

...was rhetorical, and not directed at you. I think you probably know that, but sometimes I forget to make it clear that my disgust was about the information contained in the post. :hi:

7. Well, DVDs of IED ambushes are popular items in Iraq
I wouldn't be surprised if videos of dead Marines aren't flying off the shelves as well.

8. Terrorist attacks?
Attacking civilians is terrorism. Attacking uniformed soldiers is war. There's a difference.

9. Why would anyone want to view such images?
I too regret that these images are circulating. What a sickening mess the whole thing is. War in general I mean. When I was a teenager my dad was friends with a lawyer defending an eighteen year old marine accused of taking "souvenirs" in Nam. These were ears from dead Viet Cong. I don't remember what kind of time, if any, he served, but it seems to me that war is the great uncivilizer of us all. And for someone to take photos like this (on any side) for sport shows that they have been dehumanized by the circumstances/regimes under which they find themselves.

21. Our cable media didn't play "Weekend At Bernie's" with Uday and Qusay...
...dead bodies for like ten days straight because there is no audience for that stuff. Most bo-hunks eat that shit up. Its just the way it is.

12. Will they still be sorry if its a dead terrorist?
I wonder if they were just as sorry when Rumsfeld decided to show off the dead bodies of Saddams sons.

17. the effects of war shouldn't be sanitized
Yes it was shocking to see the images of the Vietnam war -- but it is also TRUTH.

War is horrible -- and we need to be reminded of the effects of war on BOTH sides.
