Ex-president Clinton calls for US pressure on Sudan

ATLANTA, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Former President Bill Clinton said on Wednesday the United States should increase diplomatic pressure on Sudan to allow more foreign peacekeeping troops in Africa's largest country, which has been hit by three days of ethnically driven street clashes.

"What we should do is try to go to the U.N. and put some more heat on the Sudanese government," Clinton said during an appearance at a convention of African-American journalists in Atlanta.

"We need more troops there," Clinton said.

Sudan's Islamic government agreed earlier this year to accept about 10,000 peacekeeping troops as part of a peace agreement signed with rebels from its largely African Christian and animist south.

1. Clinton is one of the few...
people in politics that is actually paying attention to what is happening on the African continent. God bless him.

The Bush crime team would do well to listen to him.

3. Really, I thought it was proper to say
former President Clinton?

Not to mention, he's giving good advice but why in the world should * break a perfect record for doing the wrong thing?

6. Not to mince words, but "former" is different from "ex".
I'm actually surprised that they didn't call him "Bill".

The fucking media doesn't give this guy one ounce of respect. It's disgraceful.

8. All over a marital indiscretion
yet they give respect to a man who has murdered thousands of innocents. Unbelievable...up is down, war is peace, people have lost their minds.

I'd say there's far more cause to invade that country than there ever was for Iraq.

Unfortuantely the military has its hands full of Chimpy's excellent adventure.

5. The objective is Sudan's oil production and pipeline
The big goof during the Clinton administration was driving the Canadian's out of their oil concession with Sudan after they drilled the oil and began the pipeline project. Who bought the Canadian interest after the propaganda war against the Canadians? The Chinese. Oops!

9. The day Talisman bought Arakis the phony bombing mission
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 07:28 PM by teryang
...on the Khartoum "biological weapons" plant took place. Turned out the pharmaceutical plant produced infant formula among other things. Thereafter, the anti-slavery campaign began in a mid town manhattan office near Rockefeller Center whose object was to drive Talisman out of Sudan. State pensions funds were lobbied to dump Talisman shares, one of the most successful and well managed Canadian indepedents. Diversified in its international holdings and desirous of maintaining ethical standards they said fine and sold quickly to the Chinese. Their investigators found no evidence that pipeline revenues contributed to slavery or human rights abuses. The Sudanese government only had a 5 percent interest in the project and the oil wasn't even flowing yet.

Legislation against Sudan had previously blocked Occidental from buying the very attractive Arakis consortium interest. At the time, it was targeted to produce 185,000 barrels a day. The Chinese completed the one billion dollar pipeline and today the oil flows east instead of west.
