Bolton Says He's Listening, Not Talking
Following Advice From Former Secretary Of State

(AP) UNITED NATIONS John Bolton, the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who has a reputation for being outspoken, said Wednesday he's following the advice of former Secretary of State George Shultz and listening instead of talking.

Bolton presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Tuesday but said nothing to reporters on his way in or out of U.N. headquarters. He has been meeting one-on-one with Security Council ambassadors and was back at the United Nations on Wednesday to meet General Assembly President Jean Ping.

As Bolton was heading into Ping's office, China's U.N. Ambassador Wang Guangya was emerging and the old friends who met in the early 1990s stopped in front of a group of reporters to greet each other.

"This is sort of a courtesy call but I just wanted to say there's a lot of important work," Bolton said. "It's a very busy schedule in the first couple of days, and I think it's been productive and I'm certainly enjoying myself."

It really is amazing that the person who is supposed to be the nation's top diplomat has managed to go an entire day on the job without flipping out and going batshit crazy on someone at the UN, isn't it? Now that's news. Maybe we were too critical after all.

ya right. Yep, I think that this experience has made you more reflective rather than angry and vindictive, - yep there is a lot of evidence of self reflectiveness in your professional history. Let's see, being partner in a law firm - going to "public service" then not being welcomed back as partner to that same law firm (perhaps that experience would make one reflective, lets see... I have all of these govt contacts - could be really good for business for the firm... but there is some reason they think that there are more negatives than positives than welcoming me back... let me think about that... ) - instead he went to work for a contactor to the govt - and involved in the unsavory incident where he chases a professional (public servant? or one also working for a contractor? but who raised questions about problems with the company for which Bolton worked?) Ya - he has a big old track record of being reflective and changing his behavior.

Reminds me of Bush on his first big trip to Europe in 2001, the issue was Kyoto ... he claimed that he was looking forward to talking, and "listening" to the leaders of other countries- and then according to all accounts he lectured, bullied and was obstanant.
