Macomb community decides on name for Iraq war

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The dispute has ended in one Detroit suburb over what to call the war in Iraq.

Last month, the board in Macomb County's Shelby Township postponed a memorial to Army Private Mark Barbret while it considered what to call the war.

Some people wanted to put his name on the township war memorial under a heading that said (quote) ``War on Terror.''
Others favored (quote) ``Operation Iraqi Freedom.''

On Tuesday, the township board adopted Barbret's family request and decided to put the name under a heading that will say ``Iraq.''

4. It's amazing to me

that a local government here would take a stand in refusing to go along with the propaganda machine. I'm glad it's resolved either way, for the sake of the family, but this is especially encouraging.

8. A local repuke has built his own in a parking lot:

It's the "Mid-East Memorial Hall." A few hundred names on it, and for a Republican the guy's not entirely bad (Lonnie Hammergren, former Lieutenant Governor of Nevada). Certainly a less contentious name than "War Criminals" or "War on Terror."
