Republican differs with Bush on evolution

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A leading Republican senator allied with the religious right differed on Thursday with President Bush's support for teaching an alternative to the theory of evolution known as "intelligent design."

Republican Sen. Rick Santorum, a possible 2008 presidential contender who faces a tough re-election fight next year in Pennsylvania, said intelligent design, which is backed by many religious conservatives, lacked scientific credibility and should not be taught in science classes.

Bush told reporters from Texas on Monday that "both sides" in the debate over intelligent design and evolution should be taught in schools "so people can understand what the debate is about."

"I think I would probably tailor that a little more than what the president has suggested," Santorum, the third-ranking Republican member of the U.S. Senate, told National Public Radio. "I'm not comfortable with intelligent design being taught in the science classroom."

The election is a ways off but Bob Casey Jr. is beating the shit out of Santorum in the polls. If the election were held today or tomorrow or next month Santorum would lose. He's trying to appear moderate and like less of the nutcase that we all know him to be.

35. A couple reasons.
1) he's been a solid "toe-the-Bush-line" tool up til now, and this was a high profile break with the Bush line.

2) He also just reversed his position on stem cells, which is (I think) against the Catholic church's position, and also another break with the Bush party line.

He revealed that on his Blackberry he keeps a list of all the names he has been called. He says it's because of his faith alone, but whenever I have heard someone use the terms he mentioned, it's usually because of his insistence on using his faith to pummel the rest of us into acting like he wants.

Hiding in a church, praying, that is where the real RS is, but in reality, he would rather go to a strip joint or a titty bar, everything that comes out of his mouth is pandering, and rallying his consituents, its his job, thats what all politicians do, dems/repugs, and thats what he is doing. I think he is trying to be more moderate to get a little more votes, but i don't think he will get squat, he will lose.

40. I'd like to think this is another
case of the right eating their own. But. I'm jaded and cynical and very suspicious.
I still think the right is intentionally splitting their stated viewpoints in order to keep their adherents under their big tent. Nobody knows exactly what is going on. So, the confusion works to their advantage. They're NOT against gay rights. Yes, they are. They're for stem cell research. No. They're not. They're for teaching intelligent design. Well, no, not really.
This kind of Chinese menu approach works wonders with the freepers. They're always happy because they get just the meal they ordered.
Only, of course, they don't. No one does. It's just happy talk to keep people satiated. Meanwhile, whatever gets done will be whatever the corporate taskmasters want. Like the energy bill. And CAFTA. And our disgraceful minimum wage and healthcare.
Frist and Santorum are just part of the marketing game for the next election.
It's meaningless.

face it. The Republicans did a wonderful job of getting together and forming their message and taking it to middle America. It worked. They looked strong. They have ideas. (bad ideas...but ideas). They made the Democrats look scattered and whiney.
Now. They just want to hang on. They want to keep their power. The cohesive message is gone.
But it doesn't matter. As long as hate-radio demonizes the liberals and doesn't hold any conservatives accontable, many in middle America will keep swallowing whatever these guys serve up.

82. I think it is the latter.
Polls are showing public dissatisfaction with the current establishment, and pandering to the interests of the hard right is a big reason for this.

The Radical Right has applied the full court press, and forced legislators into questionable decisions that contradict mainstream interests (Schiavo, stem cell research, gay marriage, etc., instead of "Main Street" issues like the economy, the war, education, and health insurance). The Republicans rightfully fear a push back, and therefore some are moving distancing themselves from these extreme groups.

109. Depends on how successful the Pat Robertson gang was in taking
over the GOP. It may be the old/true Republicans that bail. Roberts plan was to take over the party by 2000 - seems he's been pretty successful. Could go either way, but I do think there will be a split - hopefully very soon.

The Christian right and the Republican Party: the dirty secret of American politics
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2000/mar2000/elec-m06.shtml

The political crisis within the Republican Party has reached an extraordinary level of intensity with the speech given by Senator John McCain February 28 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. McCain's indictment of Texas Governor George W. Bush as a prisoner of right-wing bigots was more than a campaign broadside. He put his finger on the dirty secret of modern American politics—the pervasive influence of extreme-right, racist and fascistic elements in the Republican Party.

Traveling to the city which is the headquarters of the Christian Broadcasting Network and the other business and media ventures of Pat Robertson, McCain denounced Robertson and Reverend Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority, declaring that the two right-wing fundamentalist preachers were “agents of intolerance.” McCain labeled Bush a “Pat Robertson Republican” whose subservience to the ultra-right would alienate voters and produce a Republican defeat in November.

snip.

Barely 24 hours after issuing his denunciation McCain began to retreat, after he was attacked by erstwhile supporters such as Bauer and former Secretary of Education William Bennett. McCain apologized for a later comment to the press in which he sarcastically referred to Robertson and Falwell as “the forces of evil.”

snip>

...Nonetheless, his attack on the Christian right and the ferocious response from the Republican establishment reveal political fissures within the ruling elite which have far more significance than who wins the Republican presidential nomination.

They are, as usual, having their cake and eating it here.

32. I am getting very confused by all this
Are they interchanging the terms Intelligent Design and Creationism just to muddy the waters?

What Santorum (personally think he's a idiot) said makes me very suspicious.

Let me explain. I was raised a Catholic and went to Catholic school. I WAS taught Evolution in Catholic School in Science Class. This was not that God created the world in 6 days, Adam and Eve were created from nothing, bla, bla, bla. We were learned about the big bang theory, the age of the earth, lower life forms evolving, Neanderthals, etc., etc. About the only religion brought into it all was that "God created Evolution and that once God decided to give man a soul, it didn't matter what animal form he used, it was now a human being, even if it still had more chromosomes of an ape."

I hope I have been able to explain this correctly. This is why Santorum saying this troubles me, because if you leave out the part about God's role in all this, all you are really left with is true Evolution as it is being taught now. Why would he say it is fake science? From all I have read, the Fundies believe in the literal intpretation of the Bible. The Catholic Church has never had any problem with Evolution. This is a major difference between them and the Fundies.

That is why I am worried that they are cloaking the term Intelligent Design, when they really mean Creationism: the LITERAL interpretation of the BIBLE.

43. It's intentional confusion
to cast their nets very wide.
They're catching everybody in their sticky webs. They really believe nothing but the power of money.
And they know the way to keep control -- and keep power -- and get their hands on the most money, is to spread all kinds of conflicting messages so people who aren't really paying attention will think they're being represented.
They're not.
These guys only represent themselves.
This is all marketing. It's intentional and coordinated.

64. the Intelligent Design "theory" is designed
to cast doubt on evolution, nothing more. Literally, all it offers is the belief that cells/organisms are too complex to be created "randomly." It offers no basis for this assumption, or alternative theory. I don't kbow why the theocrats want it taught, there is really nothing to teach.

91. The difference is Creationism is a creation story
while Intelligent Design is merely a criticism of evolution. IDers mischaracterize evolution as a series of random mutations, and they believe organisms are too complex and efficient for this to be true. They have their lengthy explanations I'm sure, but that is pretty much it. As I said previously, it's primary function is to cause doubt of evolution, possibly opening debate for alternative ideas.

49. LIAR! LIAR! Read Ricky's history on the Un-science issue
From National Center for Science Education

http://www.ncseweb.org/resources/articles/ID-activists-guide-v1.pdf

In proposing the amendment, Senator Santorum cited a law review article coauthored by "intelligent design" proponent David K DeWolf, professor of law at Gonzaga University and Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute's Center for the Renewal of Science and Culture. And the godfather of the "intelligent design" movement, Phillip Johnson, was quoted in the June 18 Washington Times as having "helped frame the language" of the amendment.

On June 13, 2001, the US Senate adopted a Sense of the Senate amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act Authorization bill, S 1, then under consideration. Proposed by Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), the amendment read:

It is the sense of the Senate that (1) good science education should prepare students to distinguish the data or testable theories of science from philosophical or religious claims that are made in the name of science; and (2) where biological evolution is taught, the curriculum should help students to understand why the subject generates so much continuing controversy, and should prepare the
students to be informed participants in public discussions regarding the subject.

The Santorum Language does not Appear in the Final Version of the Education Bill Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, writing in the March 14, 2002 issue of the Washington Times, claimed that his language was a "provision" of the bill:

At the beginning of the year, President Bush signed into law the "No Child Left Behind" bill. The new law includes a science education provision where Congress states that "where topics are taught that may generate controversy (such as biological evolution), the curriculum should help students to understand the full
range of scientific views that exist." If the Education Board of Ohio does not include intelligent design in the new teaching standards, many students will be denied a first-rate science education.

I am Catholic (lapsed) and although I went to public school, I have student taught in Catholic schools and know for a fact that they teach evolution and not even mention ID in class. Also even the Pope said evolution is true... I don't think there are any major religions that argue against evolution. It's these right wing wackos, otherwise known as Southern Baptists

And then of course, Santorum has a tough election fight ahead of him, he no doubt wants to appear moderate on some issues.

one republican takes this position, one takes that postition. perhaps they even switch positions at some point, what does it really matter they're just positions. it gives the right the illusion of debate - and a mirage of depth and complexity. hell, it makes both look more steadfast in a debate of their own making. perfectly framed. in the end, everybody gets their tax cut.

ya didn't think it was about God or Science did you, only blue-collar republicans believe that!

99. That will never happen
The repugs will never run a minority candidate, this is a male WASP country in their mind and it would kill the "southern strategy" if they did it. But they would gladly run somebody like Bull Connor and his fire hoses. You remember that inclusive guy that hung out with Negroes in the south during those turbulent times. They will embrace Strom Thurman and say he was very supportive of minorities, he had babies with them as proof. Strom Thurman loved Negroes so much he thought everybody should have one. They will never truly get behind a minority candidate, but they will support Strom and Bull and call it an all inclusive party.

He's managed to fool stupid people in Pennsylvania twice now through this tactic, so why not this time?

It was good fodder to base a letter to the editor of my local (PA) newspaper on. Contrasting the two statements, they're nearly exactly the same, only on the exact opposite side of the issue.

And only 2 years apart. Hell, Bush called Kerry a flip-flopper for statements that were 25 years apart about abortion. Could anything other than public opinion have motivated Santorum's flip-floppery?
