Trial lawyers tied to Perry donation
Strayhorn camp accuses governor of being hypocrite
Associated Press
AUSTIN - Republican Gov. Rick Perry received $35,000 last year from a lobbying group that got money from plaintiffs' attorneys, even though his campaign has denounced Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn for her money from trial lawyers.
Personal-injury attorneys traditionally have been a big funding source for Democrats and a target of Republicans who side with businesses looking to limit lawsuits.
Strayhorn's acceptance of trial-lawyer money is expected to be a Perry campaign theme as he and Strayhorn face each other in the March 2006 Republican primary.
A Perry spokesman accused Strayhorn last month of "selling her soul" by accepting donations from trial lawyers.
