Blair says Al-Qaeda logic 'complete obscenity'

LONDON: British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Friday it was a "complete obscenity" for Al-Qaeda to justify terrorism against Britain when it supports the killing of innocent people in attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He acknowledged that terror groups use Britain's support of the US-led war in Iraq as a means to attract new recruits, but blasted the logic reiterated in a threat by Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network on Thursday of more attacks in Britain unless British troops withdraw from Iraq.

"These very self same people who are making those remarks yesterday are the people supporting the killing of wholly innocent people in Iraq, wholly innocent people in Afghanistan, innocent people anywhere in the world who want to live by the rules of democracy," Blair said.

"And that is why, when they try to use Iraq or use Afghanistan or use the Palestinian cause as a means of saying, you know, we have justification for what we do, it is a complete obscenity," he told a news conference.

I'm an immigrant from Sweden to the U.S. My dad brought us kids here so we could have more opportunities. He was really hopeful about this country, and felt we would have better lives here.

I always loved my adopted country. Felt that this was a "beacon of hope in the world". I knew that we did some pretty bad things in South and Central America.

In the past few years, however, it started becoming clear that we were out there, hurting countries, hurting people in every corner of the world.

When Bush came on the scene, I had to find some answers. I found them here. It really hurt. I felt bad for months.

But the end result is still the same: we're out there, taking natural resources and assets from other countries. We have been for quite a while. Stick around, read threads, especially in the "Editorials and articles" room. You'll learn a lot, like I did.
