Swiss peace plan irritates Israel
http://www.nzz.ch/2003/10/15/english/page-synd4344267.html

Switzerland’s involvement in an alternative peace plan for the Middle East has aroused anger in Israel.

Israel’s ambassador to Switzerland, Aviv Shir-On, was officially briefed about the plan by the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs in Bern on Wednesday.

The so-called Geneva Accord was finalised in Jordan at the weekend with support and financial backing from the Swiss government.

It is the result of unofficial talks between members of the Palestinian authority and the Israeli opposition, and is due to be signed in Geneva on November 4.

Those darned war-mongering Swiss!

1. The Roadmap Is The Only Way
I particularly loved the piece about how the roadmap was the only plan the Israeli government endorsed.

More beating of a dead horse.

2. Tough - it seems a good plan - sounds like Clinton's Taba - and the
4 countries pushing the "road map" should get some balls and demand a referendum be held on the Swiss Plan - a vote in Israel, and a vote in the PA.

At the moment Arafat will not endorse it unless Israel does - and Sharon is not about to endorse it.

Giving up the right of return was required at Taba - and is required now - and is in this plan. I think it would pass in Israel and in the PA area by 75% to 25% votes in each area.

It is time for peace in the mid-east - it is time to have a forced referendum on the Swiss plan in both Israel, and in the PA - on the same day - at the same time - with folks understanding that 4 powers will push extremely hard if it passes both sides.

5. Good idea, and one I wish would gain support.
It is unfortunate that Israel currently has a government very much like our own (fascist and war-mongering), and no doubt they will use all their powers, including those they have with the press, to kill this plan.

Peace does not fit with the PNAC/Bush/Sharon world plan....

:grr:

13. I doubt it would pass that well in Israel
Current opinion is roughly 60/40 against.

3. Whew! Peace attempt foiled!
Morally, the Sharon government bears a certain bold similarity to the Bush government (and its bipartisan allies in the US Congress).

Their lethal equation: bloodshed is preferrable to peace on any terms other than their own colonial agenda.

8. The last thing in the world Sharon wants is peace.
He is not going to rest until the West Bank and Gaza are officially declared part of Israel.

10. The losers are once again the Israelis
but contrary to US, the majority there did choose Sharon and still rationalizes and excuses everything he does.

There is a Leftist movement and there is a growing peace movement which must be encouraged but it is very small because most Israelis do believe the myths they've been fed and because they believe those myths, they beleive the biggest lie of them all, that the Arabs want to push them into the sea only because they're Jews.

This thing is getting so sick and I am losing hope.

Year after year of seeing the same rationalizations at DU for everything Sharon does while blaming the Palestinians for not wanting peace has gotten me totally discouraged.

I am actually glad that governments are beginning to expose Israel's total unwillingness to work for peace.

Peace is the LAST thing either Israel or the US wants and that will kill us both.

11. Tinoire, you are always so well spoken!
I viewed a documentary or talk program on LINK or FSTV just the other day where someone noted that when you look at the population of Palestine versus the population of Israel that the Palestinains far out number the Israelis and will in the future.

This goes along with the genocide they are commiting against the Palestinians and the continual war and not wanting anything but war. They want to reduce their population and numbers due to FEAR.

Once again...another country...another people ruled by FEAR and justifying the murders as terror-related.

They also stated that individually the people in Israel would speak one on one about not happy with the war and wanting a peaceful solution, but they would NOT betray their country by speaking out about it publicly.

16. A few comments...
the majority didn't choose Likud. Likud got 36 seats - 30% of the vote. Likud built a coalition with other parties, and I bet that quite a few of the voters who supported those other parties are not happy with what they are doing now - especially those who stood for the more moderate Shinui party.

I think that Americans and Israelis are in similar situations. They can see for themselves the horrible results of their government's policies. Slowly, change will come here, and change will come there.

12. Face it, any peace plan will irritate the Sharon government.
I must confess, I am ashamed to keep saying Israelis. It's not ALL Jews or ALL Israelis who believe in and support the Sharon terrorist government. But until the peaceniks and refuseniks can put their money where their hearts are the manical folks will rule. Some who believe in the Palestinain cause won't speak up for fear of being disinherited...the daughter of my son's co-worker told him this. Many American Jews disagree with Sharon policies but the wealth, power, and influence lies with the older generation. She said many of her friends are just waiting for this that generation to die out... I guess she means about 40 years?

15. The Swiss are notoriously biased about this sort of issue.

The Likud Party prefers a more neutral country -- like the USA.

19. I Have a Better Peace Plan
Israel gets out of 100 percent of the West Bank (including East Jerusalem), 100 percent of the Gaza Strip, and allows all refugees the right of return or compensation.

Lest I be accused of being "anti-semitic."

When does the guilt-trip end, and criticism is fairly acknowledged?
