NYT: C.I.A. Leak Case Recalls Texas Incident in '92 Race (Rove and Novak)

C.I.A. Leak Case Recalls Texas Incident in '92 Race

WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 - These hot months here will be remembered as the summer of the leak, a time when the political class obsessed on a central question, did Karl Rove, President Bush's powerful adviser, commit a crime when he spoke about a C.I.A. officer with the columnist Robert D. Novak?

Whatever a federal grand jury investigating the case decides, a small political subgroup is experiencing the odd sensation that this leak has sprung before. In 1992 in an incident well known in Texas, Mr. Rove was fired from the state campaign to re-elect the first President Bush on suspicions that Mr. Rove had leaked damaging information to Mr. Novak about Robert Mosbacher Jr., the campaign manager and the son of a former commerce secretary.

Since then, Mr. Rove and Mr. Novak have denied that Mr. Rove was the source, even as Mr. Mosbacher, who no longer talks on the record about the incident, has never changed his original assertion that Mr. Rove was the culprit.

....

But the episode, part of the bad-boy lore of Mr. Rove, is a telling chapter in the 20-year friendship between the presidential adviser and the columnist. The story of that relationship, a bond of mutual self-interest of a kind that is long familiar in Washington, does not answer the question of who might have leaked the identity of the C.I.A. officer, Valerie Wilson, to reporters, potentially a crime.

8. Finally, the NYTimes is breaking Old History like Breaking News.
Just goes to show how irrelevant the NYTimes actually is.

In truth, this does encapsulate information on the Rove/Novak historical record for those who don't know.

Interestingly, Bush just nominated Robert Mosbacher, Jr. to be president of the Overseas Private Investment Corp. Sounds like Rove wants to keep his enemies close. It's circle the wagons time.

28. 'Tis the truth--
After you've eaten as much feces in place of truth, as has NYT, you begin to vomit uncontrollably, as has NYT.
Chortle turns to guffaw--

If all goes well the Times will continue to vomit bits of truth, one hopes, until their shaking subsides sufficiently to allow a sobering examination of how the hell they have managed to be fooled so badly, over and over.
Their blind fish on a hook act has suckered them into uncritically purchasing the services of one sorry fiction writer after another. I'll bet their automatic kneeling pad formation in front af their reich wing abusers has a lot to do with their total unwillingness to face the truth of their stupidity. I've read about folks who have lost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to some quick change scam artist or other and simply refuse to face the prospect of their own shame, sometimes to the unbelievable level of actually defending their rapists. Wonder how much of that is going on here (Oh Judith, thy voice is legion...)

Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 02:53 AM by lostnfound
Novak storms off the stage; now the NYT writes this... have the powers-that-be decided to amputate and try to contain it to those two only?
Because speculation about the Fitzgerald investigation is that the leak was a coordinated effort involving multiple leakers.

I agree it's nice to see this story in the NYT, but it does serve the purpose of limiting it to Rove and Novak.

19. It does make you wonder if Bumiller is floating hints of Plan B
Plan A--Deny, and hope the omerata keeps Fitzgerald at bay

Plan B--limit the damage to Rove, who will end up with a pardon anyhow.

Perhaps we will see signals of Plan C, D, E, and F soon. I'm thinking another Saturday Night Massacre, which, I believe, would have the support of the media this time. And I do believe that Fitzgerald has contemplated this, as per his recent interview.

35. Nah, people have been jumping ship for several month now
You almost never hear anyone saying anything nice about whats going on on NPR anymore, and those you do hear, sound ridiculous and their words ring hollow.

Also, NPR has been doing almost a daily Rove/Plame story (from the Rove is a crook angle) for weeks now. I think Judith Miller going to jail trigger most of it.

Now if you look around, you can really tell who the, "RW- bought and paid for Media Whores" are, and who are the "I was just reporting what everyone else was reporting, so as to not draw undo attention to myself" reporters are.

It's really starting to look like the Rats are jumping ship, just before it sinks.

46. How come I don't think Novak will fall on the sword willingly...
...the pressure on Novak may cause him to break ranks and spill his guts. Rove has been retrieved from oblivion once before so I doubt he will say much of anything.

Or am I just wishing upon a star here...

Amputation may indeed be the current thought in the mis-administration. "*"'s loyalty will only go so far...and the rest have no loyalty at all.

22. Wow! Interesting Bush v McCain Back-story
"I thought another firm was better," Mr. Mosbacher told The Chronicle. "I had $1 million for direct mail. I gave Rove a contract for $250,000 and $750,000 to the other firm."

The other firm belonged to Mr. Rove's chief competitor, John Weaver, and Mr. Rove was so angry, Texas Republicans say, that he retaliated by leaking the information about Mr. Mosbacher to Mr. Novak.

Mr. Mosbacher fired Mr. Rove. As a result, Mr. Weaver, who later faced off against Mr. Rove as the political director of Senator John McCain's presidential campaign in 2000, walked away with Mr. Rove's $250,000, too.

"That's about the only time that a Novak column benefited me," Mr. Weaver said this week in a telephone interview.

Rove must have really delighted in his McCain slander. Two hits for the price of one.

Side note: Bumiller makes mention of Novak's anniversary party in 2003, with Rove attending as special guest. She says nothing, though, about the buttons the many of the guests, including Rove, wore:

"I'm a SOURCE, not a TARGET"

26. It seems obvious that the evidence is there. As with many of the
outrages over the last several years there is plenty of information to support justice, yet as usual no one has a sufficient platform from which to adequately put it together for the American people. The problem I guess is which political/corporate powers will ultimately triumph, allowing or blocking a potential prosecution.

As usual Bush shows his hand. Anyone who believes that this guy has any measure of integrity in insane. He shows again and again that his attitude toward the American people, the world is best illustrated by the recent flip-offs. Basically "fuck you".

These are dangerous times people and this administration must be stopped at all costs if we hope to salvage any part of what we once believed about America.

Double, triple, quadruple your efforts because I believe there is some traction. Not enough mind you, but certainly enough to be encouraging. And whereas there are many fronts, my belief is that we need to attack the money, in huge numbers. If the corps feel threatened (financially) it will certainly help to speed the process of reforming our government.

If there is any doubt that corps are complicit, consider that ExxonMobil made over 7.5 billion in pure profit in just the last 3 months...

29. I think it is necessary to show how ruthless and dishonest Bush is
through this whole Rove thing. The Repubs have spent many marketing hours in defining Dems as an inferior choice in elections. We need to use this opportunity to define and expose the tactics being used by the Repubs to character assassinate their opponents with Rove as an example of their "hit man" mentality. There's a thin line in many swing
voters' minds between being tough and being ruthless and mean spirited.
We have to redefine the Repubs as the party of sleaze in the public image.

32. White House Denies Existence of Karl Rove
WASHINGTON, DC—The White House denied rumors of wrongdoing by anyone named Karl Rove Monday, saying the alleged deputy chief of staff does not exist.

"To my knowledge, no one by the name of Karl Rove works for this president, his staff, or for that matter, anyone on earth, since he is not a real person," White House press secretary Scott McClellan told reporters Monday.

Despite White House denials, allegations have surfaced in recent weeks that Karl Rove is the man who leaked covert CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity to the press. He is rumored to be President Bush's senior advisor, chief political strategist, architect of the president's 2000 and 2004 election victories, and the current deputy White House chief of staff, as well as a frequent guest on televised political talk shows.

34. Rove leak
How can the Democrats prevail against all this corruption? If we (the Democrats) play by the rules and the other team doesn't (ie. sleaze campaigns, voting fraud, bribery, etc., etc.,), how can we expect to win? Also, the money factor is big. The wealthy people and the corps have a lot more money to contribute than does the average joe Democrat. I would like to contribute to the campaigns of some of the Democrats, but after giving to some of the environmental and animal protection groups, which are starved for funding, there's not much left to give. And with the media not reporting the truth, what can we do to turn around the political climate? I'm afraid that once Bush and Cheney are out, there's just going to be another Bush and Cheney waiting in the wings to continue the downward slide of this once great country.

41. Just two days ago
Just two days ago you were not a participant at DU. Today, I read your first post here at DU as you take that first, tentative step into public activism. Feels good doesn't it?

Millions more Americans are just a step or two behind you, not to mention the millions of Americans with whom you are joined.

How can the Democrats prevail against all this corruption? Well, rephrase your question while imagining yourself Martin Luther King in 1962. Your question then might have been something like, "How can the negro prevail against all this corruption?"

As far and wide the odds were stacked against him, MLK did not despair or let the temporary setbacks stray him from realization of his dream. Looking at the political landscape today, wouldn't you say, "Indeed, it was a struggle, but against all odds the common good prevailed."

Take inspiration from those "socialists" who rose up and demanded an end to child labor exploitation, the end of adult labor exploitation and the end of an era when women could not vote.

Take inspiration from Native American tribes who now herd a different kind of buffalo into their tribal casinos.

Against always seemingly impossible odds, the Democrat philosophy has prevailed.

We are the party of true compassion. We are the party that truly adheres to the biblical admonishment to care for "those least among us."

It doesn't take $1,000 donations to be a democrat, though that would be nice. It really takes a heart in the right place, a willingness to vote, donations when you can and a love for your fellow humanity.

Most important, as you've done today, get involved in the struggle. Up periscope, focus on the objective, damn the torpedos and full speed ahead.

Welcome to DU. I'm kinda new here myself.

51. Great answer
Thanks for the greetings from you and the others. I've enjoyed reading DU for several months now and it's nice to be part of the chatter.
What I don't understand is how some people can't see this administration for what it is: evil, corrupt, greedy, etc. I only had to look at "W" to know he's a lying BLEEP. How can anyone looking (or listening) to him and his cronies not see these people for what they are? And what about the next ones in line? Frist, Mitt Romnney (Republican Governor from MA), Jeb Bush, etc. are just as bad.
People like Ted Kennedy seem to genuinely want to help people and to do good things for our country. I hate it when I hear him ridiculed (usually by Republicans). I think a lot of Republicans are just bullies at heart who see compassion as a weakness.

52. Ask Auntie Pinko
While I could ramble on for several pages in answering your question, that dear lady, Auntie Pinko, can give you a much more succinct answer than I.

Your post is perfectly framed. Copy and paste and ask the dear lady.

Would be fun to read her answer and she's always open to questions.

While I don't presume to speak for her, I wouldn't be surprised if the phrase, "selfish greed" was included.

Welcome here again, PIB.

47. Don't quit, for that way leads to Darkness,
Talk loudly and often. This is the most corrupt administration since Grant's following the American Civil War. If we do not join the struggle, our children and grandchildren will pay the price.

Now repeat after me, "I'm not dead yet"
Ok louder,"I"M NOT DEAD YET"

Now don't pick up a gun (yet), talk to anyone who will listen and tell them what is happening. Refer them to DU. Rattle their brains (figuratively) and try to get them to think.

Don't Quit !!!!

36. One would think ...
... with the plethora of Watergate criminals that Cheney brought to the Administration, and Jr bringing Kriminal Karl; that someone - anyone - during the 99/00 campaign would have done some background on this group of theives and said 'Excuse me but why the fuck are these fools allowed to run for office, instead of being in PRISON somewhere?"

Where is the background check-investigative journalist anymore ??

I'm sure nobody in America had any clue what kind of thugs they were letting in the front door at 1600.

56. Very true, Hippiechick
"Karl Rove got fired by my daddy for revealing classified info to that partisan GOP hack Novak- what makes you think he'll do it again?"

Novak's featured on my expanded Assclown of the Week feature, btw.

59. I agree...
These stories are old, and certainly out of date.
Without any new news on this matter, I think it will all but dissapear.
