Candidate Drops Out of N.C. Council Race

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A city council candidate dropped out of the race Friday after it was disclosed that he posted comments to a white supremacist Internet bulletin board more than 4,000 times.

Doug Hanks said the postings were fictional and designed to win white supremacists' trust as he researched a novel he was writing. He said the book was also meant to appeal to white supremacists.

"I needed information for the book and some other writings I was doing," Hanks told The Associated Press on Friday. "I did what I thought I needed to do to establish myself as a credible white nationalist."

I remember a news story a couple of years ago about a truck driver who was arrested for possession of child pornography. He was quoted as saying that he was actually an anti-child-porn activist, and he kept the stuff in the cab of his truck so that if he got sleepy while driving he could take a look at it and get angry, which would wake him up.

you should be aware that he was cleared by the British courts. I also remember reading in the stories at the time that there was evidence that he was telling the truth. And that was backed up by some of the quotes from the officials. Prior to his arrest, he had spoken of being sexually abused as a child. When he was arrested he said that he had been to those sites as investigation for his autobiography, if I remember the story accurately.
It's not like I'm a huge Peter Townsend fan or anything, but there is a good chance that he just got caught in a dragnet.

Doug Hanks was outed because he was involved with a local issue concerning the flying of the Confederate flag in a city-owned cemetary. The flag had always been flown within a small cemetary plot where several Confederate soldiers were buried. There is a marble memorial stone which also has a flag embedded. The memorial for the most part went unnoticed by the public since it was not prominently located, but a local Democratic city council member noticed it a couple of years ago and asked that the flag be removed. It became a local cause celebre for a small cadre of rednecks who accused the city of defacing the graves and staged public protests. The city responded by changing the cemetary ordinance to allow only US and NC flags. Here's a clip:


Hanks, 36, first drew public attention in January, when he scaled a flagpole in Elmwood Cemetery and reattached a Confederate battle flag. The city later removed the flag and the pole.

Hanks used the incident to buttress his campaign, speaking at a March rally in the cemetery. Ten days before the rally, Hanks posted a message on stormfront.org and asked for support.

"How many can show up to this rally? We are going to make it a little longer than the last one in case there are traffic issues again," he wrote. "Can we get at least a dozen SFers to show? The City wants this swept under the rug and we aren't about to let it happen."

Cemetery preservationists Mark and Shanna Palmer condemned Hanks' actions Thursday.

Hanks' posts continued throughout the spring and summer. On June 1, he wrote:

"When Blacks start acting equally, only then will they enjoy the benefits of being treated equally. I treat a rabid dog differently from a healthy one. In fact, this gives me a terrific idea! Let's treat all the Blacks like the rabid beasts they are. `Yeller! Here Boy!' "
