Senators Lugar, Biden speak out on Iraq

WASHINGTON Senator Joe Biden says the military still has too few troops in Iraq to defeat the insurgency.

He also says Iraqi forces aren't ready to begin taking over the fight against militants.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, the Democrat from Delaware said fewer than three-thousand Iraqi troops are capable of securing the nation on their own. He said the vast majority of Iraq's forces still need significant U-S help or are completely incapable of completing their tasks.

Meantime, Republican Dick Lugar said the military is still adjusting to handling insurgent tactics. But he said U-S forces are helping in training Iraqis to one day take over for them.

2. Biden, like Wes Clark, thinks we can win this war if...
we just throw more resources into it.

The only thing that these "I can fight the war better than Bush" types will accomplish is in prolonging the misery we have brought to the Iraqi people. Biden and Clark both ignore the moral dilemma we find ourselves in Iraq. Our invasion of Iraq is on the same moral plane as Saddam's invasion of Kuwait. Just as the world rightly demanded from Iraq an unconditional and immediate withdrawal from Kuwait, so must we demand the same from the US in Iraq.

6. Don't know about Biden, but Clark seems to realize that his..
position is based upon really wanting to get out. He knows that if we really want to leave we can do what is necessary to leave. All we have to do is train the Iraqi security forces so that they can defend themselves. He believes (and I agree) that it is immoral to leave before they are able to defend themselves from what WE created.

Clark knows that the bushies don't really want to leave. That is why they aren't doing what is necessary to leave. I don't know what Biden believes. I do think that it is unfair of you to lump Clark and Biden together in any way.

17. Think about what you and some others are suggesting
>>>All we have to do is train the Iraqi security forces so that they can defend themselves.<<<

All we have to do you say.

Ask yourself what would happen if another country came and bombed and took over America and then began buddying up with the Republicans giving all them the good jobs and best places to live, etc.?

Or ask yourself what would happen if another country came and bombed and took over America and then began buddying up with the Democrats and did the same thing in reverse?

Now think about trying to build a functioning military and police force in either of those situations. Could you do it?

All we have to do...

Don

14. The only thing this bullshit does is give aid and comfort to the enemy
bunkerboy and the repuke party.

THEY are the ones who started this war when EVERYBODY ELSE wouldn't - based on lies.

Bidden and the other vichy dems are giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

3. The British had 500,000 troops
in Iraq and only faced 3 million locals in the 20's and had their asses handed to them. At the same ratio of 6 to 1 we would need over 4 million troops over there and it still wouldn't work.

11. You know, I understand that americans are ignorant
and pride themselves on their no-nothing attitude, so it is understandable why they would walk into Iraq ignorant of what had gone down there over the last 100 years. But what the f* is Tony Bliar's excuse?

5. wash, rinse, repeat
this is so very tiresome and it pisses me off. Too bad joe hasn't noticed that even a crazy repuke Rep. from NC is saying we need a timeline for pullout and an actual playbook. I hope this comes back to bite Biden in the ass.

8. Biden and Lugar need to take a walk

The Wall

excerpt:

"Fifty Eight Thousand Two Hundred And Twenty Nine. Every one of them a son; a brother, or a father, a husband, a cousin, a lover, a neighbor, a friend. Fifty Eight Thousand Two Hundred And Twenty Nine boys brought home in boxes. For what? For fuckin' nothing. And now the bastards are gonna do it again."

"You mean Iraq ?" I asked. "That isn't gonna be for nothing. Saddam is dangerous, he has to be stopped."

The man could barely conceal his contempt. "Give me a break. A danger to who? Us here in the U.S. of A.? Is his navy off our coast? Is his air force flying over our cities? The only danger he poses is to his neighbors, maybe, and they're so worried about it that they're willing to let us die for them, but won't fight him themselves. And they want us to pay them for the privilege. With friends like that...." His voice trailed off. "Maybe you're right," he finally said, "this isn't for nothing. It's for oil."

<snip>

"You know what really galls me? How those that seem to yell loudest for war have never seen one. They've never seen a buddy disappear from the waist up after a shell hit, then see his legs stand there for a moment before falling over. They never saw a friend all psyched up about going home tomorrow after finishing his tour get hit in the belly with shrapnel, see his guts spill out, then watch him try to gather up his intestines lying in the dirt.

"They never saw what napalm does to a little girl's skin. They never saw a 19-year-old from Iowa screaming and writhing on the ground because a mine blew his legs off. They never saw a man take a bullet through the brain, then watch his body flop around on the ground for a minute or so because it doesn't realize he's dead. They never put pieces of someone into a bag, not knowing who it was until you read the tags, because there wasn't any face left to go along with the other parts. They haven't seen the shit I've seen, and they want to do it all over again. Those bastards!

"But what really makes me mad is how those who should know better seem to have forgotten. All those vets in Congress, POW's even, who know what I'm talking about, but will go along with the calls for war because it's politically expedient. Don't they remember? Do they really want another generation of kids to experience that shit? Have they gotten so accustomed to the trappings of power that people are just pawns, tools, mere things to be manipulated for their own ends? DO THEY KNOW WHAT THE FUCK THEY'RE DOING?

9. well Mr. Biden, I was against us going into Iraq
I knew they didn't have WMDs, I knew they were NOT an immenent threat to us, I would have had the U.N. do their job, but you and others decided to give bush the authority to declare war on Iraq, and now you cry we need more troops. Biden you aren't going to touch my kid because of YOUR MISTAKE!!!

Why don't you get your buddies at MBNA to volunteer?
