'Shared threats' bring Syria and Iran together: Ahmadinejad

Iran's new President Mahmood Ahmadinejad welcomed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Tehran on Sunday, vowing to strengthen ties between the two countries brought together by "shared threats".

"Syria represents the frontline of the Muslim nation, shared threats bring us together and make our cooperation even more necessary," Ahmadinejad said ahead of talks with the leader of Iran's leading Arab ally.

"Reinforcing our bilateral relations will protect the region against the threats of its enemies ... our enemies are trying to undermine this relationship," he said.

Iran and Syria both face US sanctions for their alleged sponsorship of terrorism and quest for non-conventional weapons. They also stand accused of playing a spoiling role in their shared neighbour Iraq.

1. So now we have
a Syria-Iraq-Iran axis in the ME, which we didn't have prior to this debacle, their supposed membership in the "Axis of Evil" notwithstanding.

2. Yeah but...
We've got 14 permanent military bases squatting on the Iraqi cheap-oil reserves and a compliant population (ours) willing to put up with the endless low intensity warfare so long as they can have their hummers.

5. Yup. Your post just reminded me
of an article about Empires in general. It said that "Empires go out and take other countries assets. The population gets to share in the booty. In exchange, they offer up their young men to die in their wars of conquest."

It was a chilling article that made my blood run cold, because I always tended to think of the leadership benefiting from the looting. It never occurred to me that the population was complicit in this. That they actually TRADED their young people in exchange for booty.

Horrible thought.

9. but this our reality
isn't it? Its too late in the game to just pass it off as "we was fooled". The whole WMD excuse crap was years ago, and the Cabal has been shape-shifting the reason du jour for why we are continuing to kill Iraqis and occupy their nation on a regular basis. I can no longer give the 40% or so who continue to support this policy the benefit of the doubt. They support it because they think it is in their interest to do so. Also I think most of the support comes from people who are willing to trade your sons and daughters, not necessarily their sons and daughters, for cheap oil.

7. That's right, Latin America is coming together....
as evidenced by their rejection of "democracy monitoring" proposed by the U.S. at the OAS, among other things. These idiots are even fighting with democracies, because they reject the unfettered capitalism BushCo wants to impose on the world.

6. Iran and Syria, strategic allies

Tehran times ...
Largely consists of fellation of Assad, but shows which way the wind blows.

Syrian President Bashar Assad is scheduled to arrive in Tehran today for an official visit to Iran in order to hold discussions on Tehran-Damascus bilateral cooperation in all political, economic, and cultural spheres.

Due to their common anti-Zionist stance and their resistance to Zionist expansionism in the region, both Syria and Iran have been targets of U.S. propaganda campaigns for the past 25 years.

Syria, which is located in the heart of the Middle East, has always played a significant role in regional political developments since the late Hafez Assad assumed the presidency in 1970.

Syria’s active role in the Arab League, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has given it great influence in regional and international decision-making processes.
