Mike Allen, a reporter for The Washington Post, said yesterday that he had accepted an offer from Time magazine to cover the White House. His hiring may have implications for the status of Time's other White House correspondent, Matthew Cooper.
Mr. Allen, 41, is filling a slot vacated by John Dickerson, who left Time in May to join the online magazine Slate. That departure left Mr. Cooper as Time's only correspondent at the White House.
Mr. Cooper disclosed to a grand jury last month that his source for an article about the leak of the name of a C.I.A. operative was Karl Rove, President Bush's top political adviser.
It is not clear what effect that disclosure has had on Mr. Cooper's ability to eke information out of an administration that was already tight-lipped. Mr. Cooper, who has continued to produce White House articles, said yesterday: "I love covering the White House, and so far, I haven't detected anything that's made it impossible for me to do my job."
Jim Kelly, Time's managing editor, said Mr. Cooper had been talking to his editors about his future. But he declined to speculate about how long Mr. Cooper might remain at the White House, saying the magazine wanted to "let the dust settle" from the leak case before making any decisions. The grand jury is scheduled to disband at the end of October....
