I've been smoke-free for twenty years, and when I quit, I started getting up and getting out of the house; smoking while watching TV was a favorite hobby. I quit smoking cold turkey in 1982 and it was remarkably easy. I just switched back to swimming and running, but alas I started back in 1996 and haven't even attempted to quit since. It's a disgusting habit for sure, but since our youngest sibbling died of cancer earlier this year and she never smoked, I doubt that Jennings death is enough to inspire me to stop.
My beloved didn't quit in '82 and his smoking never bothered me and although I suggested that he should quit given his genetic predisposition to heart problems, he continued until he had a heart attack two years ago. Of course he quit instantly. His illness scared me, but since longevity and good health abounds in my family, I saw no reason to quit.
Maybe I need to focus on the complete waste of money spent on this stupid habit.

Make a promise to someone else that you will quit. Make it absolute. Use nicotine gum or some other method to help you over the cravings.

Do it cold turkey: decide in advance when your last cigarette EVER is going to be. Make it a memorable time (New Year's, birthday, or the like).

Then just do it. Ride out the cravings. Don't leave yourself open to the possibility of having even one more cigarette, ever, in your entire life.

The most important thing is to make it an absolute, serious, public committment to someone else. Maybe even more than one person, e.g., your spouse, parents, and children. Set up "check-ins" with them where you will be held to account for your success (or lack of) in quitting. Allow yourself even one cigarette and you will be smoking forever. Don't forget that.

Don't disappoint that person (people). You can do it. And you will be so proud of yourself.

I am sorry that you received such a harsh response. I was reading all these threads and smokers' pain was resonating for me as well. I quit, and I can't believe this, but it is either 3 or 4 years ago in January! I can't believe I will have to figure out which it is! I smoked 30 years, camel straights, or roll your own. Granted I never smoked more then a pack a day and for the last decade more like a guilty 1/2 pack, then down to 1/4 pack the last 5 years. I loved smoking...loved it. I always joke that it will be the only thing good about a terminal illness...I will smoke again...

But I won't.

After the harsh reply you got, I guess I will refrain from sharing how I did it. Unlike the previous poster, I drank up every bit of advice when I wanted to quit, unless it was from my immediate family. So If anyone wants to PM me for some advice / ideas...I have some.

I'm so sad. Back when I lived in the UK, I used to watch world news tonight on BBC news 24 every night at 2am, just to get my US perspective. He helped me to feel closer to my then fiance living in the US. It just doesn't seem real.

Jennings, Peter (1938- )

Peter Jennings in 1965 became the youngest national network news anchor ever appointed in the U.S. He was 27. Unfortunately, an expected audience increase didn't materialize. Critics blamed his Canadian background, youth and lack of worldly experience.

But in 1983 Peter was appointed anchor and senior editor of World News Tonight and went on to gain international acclaim.

Peter was born in Toronto, son of Charles Jennings who was the first Canadian news announcer to broadcast nationally and later became a CBC vice-president.

By the age of nine, Peter had his own half-hour weekly children's radio show on CBC, called Peter's People. On leaving school, he started work in a bank but followed his father into broadcasting in 1959, joining radio station CFJR Brockville, Ont. He provided CBC with coverage of a train wreck and as a result was offered his first TV job - at CJOH-TV Ottawa when it went on-air in 1961. Michael Nolan, in his book CTV-The Network That Means Business, noted that Peter first became popular as host of a teenage dance program called Club 13.

Peter moved into news and in 1963 became co-anchor of the CTV National News. CTV was new and at that time its national news was broadcast from CJOH-TV.

Peter was noticed by ABC and moved to New York in 1964 to anchor a segment of ABC-TV's evening news, jumping the following year into the national slot.

The ratings were disappointing, with Peter competing against figures like Walter Cronkite on CBS. After three years ABC made him a foreign correspondent. In 1971 he received an award for reporting on the civil war in Bangladesh and at about that time he was appointed head of the ABC News Middle East bureau in Beirut, where he established the first U.S. news bureau in the Arab world. A profile of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat won him a Peabody Award in 1974. The same year he was in Washington briefly as correspondent for ABC's A.M. America, but in 1975 he went to London as chief foreign correspondent for ABC-TV. There he anchored the international section of ABC's World News Tonight until he moved back to New York and assumed leadership of the entire show.

During the Gulf War, Peter's experience in the Middle East gave him a leg up on other U.S. network anchors, and in 1991 ABC-TV became recognized as the U. S. network with the most popular national newscast.

Among his numerous awards were more than a dozen Emmys. The Boston Globe said in 1995 that Edward R. Murrow had passed the torch to Peter Jennings.

Robert Goldberg and Gerald Jay Goldberg wrote a biography called Anchors: Brokaw, Jennings, Rather, and the evening news. Peter's books include The Century and The Century for Young People, co-authored with Todd Brewster, an ABC colleague. He also co-authored In Search of America with Todd Brewster.

I am very sad to hear about Peter Jennings. I cried when he announced he had lung cancer and I cried today. My father was diagnosed with a similar form of lung cancer in the fall of 1998. My father was one of the lucky ones and he has been cancer free for over 5 years now. I prayed that Mr. Jennings would be so lucky. I know this news will be very hard on my father. I wish Mr. Jennings would have shown the world what an ugly and extremely shameful disease lung cancer is. When Mr. Jennings announced he had lung cancer he felt the need to explain that he was a long time smoker. When my family discusses my father's cancer, people always ask "did he smoke?" There is a stigma attached to lung cancer you don't get with other cancers. My prayers go out to his family. I understand the guilt, pain and helplessness completely.

I do cancer research with lung cancer cell lines and am shocked by the puritanic attitude toward lung cancer. It is the biggest cancer killer and a large percentage of its victims HAVE NEVER SMOKED! Yet funding for research into lung cancer is WAY less than for breast, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic! It's very hard to get funding to do research with lung cancer. Many believe that it is due to the stigma connected with smoking--the attitude that if you have it, you brought it on yourself. It's truly disgraceful and those of us in the business, who have also lost loved ones to this killer are furious about it.

He was part of my after high school classes routine. . . I would go to Soccer Pratice. . . Come home take a quick shower have a sandwich or hamburger and then watch the 6:30 News Live with Peter Jennings. In fact, I think I can honestly say Watching Peter Jennings is what finally got me into watching and paying attention the news simply for the fact he was what was on after soccer practice. It stuck with me after high school ended if I came home from work early enough he be the first thing I watch during dinner. Once he left the air due to cancer though watching it wasn't the same and I stopped. . . I didn't stop paying attention to the news but mostly I've been getting my news via internet sources and newspaper. I've always enjoyed his broadcasts and liked the man himself. He had his faults but he was better than a lot of the broadcasters that have been produced as of late. By me he will be missed. R.I.P Jennings. . .
