http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-bomb08.htmlA 34-year-old Chicago Police officer from the Rogers Park District was one of the first cops on the scene after three loud booms startled residents near Howard Street beach on Nov. 29.
He later received an honorable mention for finding an explosive device on a retaining wall at 1311 W. Howard.
Now the officer is the main suspect in setting off the device, described as a bundle of three metal pipes filled with explosives, said a source familiar with the investigation. Yet he is still on the job, working on a lakefront bike patrol and armed with a gun -- something that's surprising to some police officials aware of the situation.
No one was injured in the explosion. The galvanized pipes were capped on one end. Projectiles of some kind apparently were launched from the open end of the pipes.
