Gene-Modified Corn Gone from Mexico, Study Finds

------------------------------------------------------------------------

WASHINGTON - The Mexican region where modern corn originated shows no traces of a genetically engineered contamination that caused an international uproar and created tension over US corn imports, researchers said on Monday.

"If they were there, they are gone," Exequiel Ezcurra, a former Mexican official who is now with the San Diego Natural History Museum in California, said in a telephone interview.

He said an educational campaign to make farmers in Oaxaca state aware of the issue evidently has worked, and the farmers apparently were able to eliminate the undesirable corn imports.

When the genetically modified corn was discovered in September 2001 deep in mountainous Oaxaca, it raised alarms around the world and sparked protest from global activist groups like Greenpeace.

The culprit was clear -- Mexico imports between 5 million and 6 million tonnes of maize from the United States each year, and close to half of all US corn is genetically modified.

1. I'll give this a
Kick..I only eat organic Corn On The Cob..I don't want any genetics modified in my food.

This is Great News..I remember seeing that report on the Mexican Corn..quite a while back. Oh, that it has a happy ending when there's so much bullshit in the world.

8. That's just plain not true - you may be talking about
hybridizing/cross-breeding, but that is MUCH different than what is being talked about here.

You already know this, it's been told to you a hundred times on these threads before and I have never seen you successfully refute it. It makes me wonder why you are so determined to convince people that this is a good thing?

11. He is actually right
In a way Corn's DNA has been changed over a long period of time by Native Americans. They used the process of SELECTION (evolution) to select which corn they would replant. In this way they engineered corn to it's modern day form. This domestication of corn transformed corn from a small hard stock with few seeds which were hard to remove to the large soft stock with many more seeds which are easy to remove.

12. Hybridizing is WAY different than
the genetic modification being discussed here.

We are talking about changing the DNA on a cellular level in ways that DO NOT occur in nature. This is quite different from simply letting 2 varieties of a plant cross-breed. This would be more comparable to inter-species breeding. It is forcing foreign genetic material into a plant's DNA.

5. The only corn I eat is grown 4 miles from my house ,
by an organic grower. I love summer because I can get my produce there at a reasonable price. Some things I grow in my own garden.

10. A few years ago I did a report on GM foods
I went in without a bias, and in the end, I'd rather not have GM foods...organic is the way to go.

This is huge that Mexican Corn is back to the original state. :)
